"The world we're on does not like being invaded. When it is, it creates defenders by binding a shard of itself to somebody with a local perspective, thus creating a Crux Mage. These shards are nearly mute, nearly without volition, but they are very real entities with their own names, and when needed or called on, they lend their power to their hosts. They are all technically under the supervision of a Crux exoshard and its host, that is to say, myself, although those who aren't at the invasion point tend to be on their own unless I'm asked to step in."
