The Knot in the Weave
Created centuries ago by the elves of Illefarn is the magical anomaly known as the Knot in the Weave. A group of elvish wizards attempted to transcend reality by magical means. They did this in the catacombs beneath Aelinthaldaar, modern day Waterdeep.
Their ritual backfired and caused the elven mages to be scourged from reality. A magical blockage was created in Weave where the ritual was completed. This magic was benign and inactivate until Halaster Blackcloak, known by Hilather at the time, traveled to the ruins of Aelinthaldaar to construct his tower.
The magic slowly corrupted him making him ever more mad every day. It also influenced the ground below. The young dwarven city of Melairbode was in a golden age and had profited greatly from the mythril they mined. However this era of prosperity would come to a end. The Knot made the realm rich and prosperous by infusing the ground with mythril but that wealth is also a prosperous target. Duregur, drow, and a demilich all attacked the kingdom in quick succession. This weakened the military might of Melairbode enough for Hilather´s fiendish army to quickly over take them.
The newly renamed Halaster became even more insane and twisted as the years went on. He grew to be fickle, wrathful, and quite maniacal over time. Discarding and gaining new apprentices over the years, as well as kidnapping monsters and people for his own amusement. The magic that made him insane also keeps him alive and powerful in Undermountain. For when he dies in the Underhalls a few days later he will return alive and more insane than before. His last traces of sanity being washed away with each death.
It is said that if Halaster were to die out of Undermountain he would be permanently killed, unless someone revives him of course. But another rumor says that if he were to be taken from the source of his madness then his sanity would return.
