Session 16: Traitor
General Summary
The session opened in Nimera’s Cathedral in Bastion, where the party grappled with the aftermath of Saphira’s petrification from a cursed dagger. Nimera, recognizing the curse’s severity, warned that the party had only three days to break it before Saphira would remain stone forever. Ireena mentioned a priest at St. Andral’s Church in Vallaki known for lifting curses. Determined to act swiftly, the party prepared to travel to Vallaki, leaving Saphira in the cathedral to secure a wagon for transport. Unbeknownst to them, Saphira’s curse revealed its true nature once all eyes were off her: she only turned to stone when observed. Nimera noticed this and closed her eyes, allowing Saphira to move freely and leave the cathedral.
While preparations were underway, the party observed Bastion’s growing population and its struggles with a lack of law enforcement and formal laws. Dorian visited Bildrath and Parriwimple, who had relocated their business to the village’s general goods store. He struck a deal with Bildrath, securing a wagon in exchange for waiving the store’s 10% income tax for a month. Meanwhile, Hader and Damien mediated a dispute between Mad Mary and a Dusk Elf named Leodin, who had broken Mary’s leg in alleged self-defense after she brandished a knife. Hader ruled that Leodin must care for Marry until her leg healed. At the local inn, the party learned that Kyra, a homunculus they met in the Vistani camp, had arrived in Bastion, claiming through non-verbal communication that the dragonborn she sought had passed through the village.
Through a series of mishaps, Saphira, still affected by her curse, made her way to the wagon, where the party discovered that wrapping her in a bedsheet prevented her petrification. Before departing, Dorian visited Doru, held near the entrance to the Endless Paths, and delivered blood-colored “medicine.” Doru revealed that the sealed door to the Endless Paths wouldn’t open and warned of monsters behind it. Examining the seal, Dorian determined it could only be opened by “someone blessed by the moon.” Doru requested books, but Dorian instead asked Nimera to speak with him. As Dorian left, Nimera began reciting the first passage of the Book of Selune to Doru.
The party set out for Vallaki, traveling a full day without incident. In the dead of night, a girl’s whimpering drew their attention to the woods. Upon investigation, they discovered not a girl but a grotesque swarm of spiders with a girl’s torso protruding from it. The creature engaged the party in combat, and the session ended with the battle unfolding.
