Session 1-11: Consequences of Actions

General Summary

Year 116 on Firthtag the 19th day of Kalt

Coming up on midmorning in the Undermill Pub.   The Group having run all over town, breaks and rests while getting a bite to eat at the Undermill pub. The group talks about how they might best be able to find the artifact that Morr's Avatar told them about. There are a few other patrons in the pub at this hour of the day, but it is generally quite.   Raven sits perched on the top crest rail of the chair with her legs curled up feet resting on the back. While it seems like it would tip over, and be uncomfortable Raven seems to not care. She looks out at the people in the room head turning this way and that as she looks at the goings-on of everyone and everything in the room.   As the group talks, Sypha works on a ritual spell that is written on Raven's upper torso. Raven without a care in the world, drops the robe she is wearing without getting up off the chair, nor stopping her looking about the room. This new development in non-shyness gains her a group of customers that turn to enjoy breakfast while looking her way.   Roni looks up when the room gets quiet and noticed the naked girl on the chair. However a shrug of the shoulders she goes back to wiping down the counter. After Sypha finishes casting the spell, she gets Raven to cover back up, then joins in the conversation taking place in the bar. Atznox brings out food and drinks for all seven people to the tables the group pushed together.   Carilius explains the limits of the detection magic he was using this morning as they ran through the local farms and their barns. If it was as easy as casting a spell to reveal the item, others would have likely done so already. The group would need another plan of action.   As they continue to talk through these options the party starts to notice a number of dogs outside slowly build into a barking cacophony. The group notices a couple of road wardens outside tieing up their horses. The dogs of the area, do not seem to like them much.   Outside the Pub   Sypha is the first to make it out of the door and overhears the two talking before they take notice of her. She hears that they had been searching all night with nothing to show for it, that what they had been searching for had just disappeared. The first warden who was dismounted from his horse sees Sypha as well as Tycone and Carilius just now exiting the building. Seeing the dragonborn the first warden tells the other, in the same bestial language as they used last night, to "Ride, go get Garth!". As Sypha hears this she immediately casts a spell.   Swirling her hands the sunlight glints off of a dark handled ornately crafted athame knife in Sypha's right hand. Shadowy wisps of magical energy spread out as she chants her spell leaving the second road warden locked in place, unable to move. The first warden seeing this mounts his horse as Sypha asks why he is so ready to leave.   The road warden informs her that they seek the "Dragon Warrior", when she asks "Why?", his response is simple "Murder". With that he spurs his horse forward to put distance between him and this dark spell caster. Tycone and Carilius are told by Sypha that the road wardens are claiming that Tycone murdered someone they need to run and hide.   The rider stops as he is nearing the end of the street to exchange words with a man standing in the road. There is gesturing, pointing and looks back toward the pub by the warden and man in the street. Seeing this Sypha starts walking toward the two, while Carilius and Tycone go back inside the pub. Before Sypha makes it to the rider and stranger, the rider strikes the horse and kicking it to speed forward and leave the hamlet behind.   The man in the street then turns as Sypha walks towards him, he also closes the distance so they can talk. The man begins to inquire about what is going on. Indications that she, Sypha had upset the wardens. Sypha told him she did nothing to them and had just been asking about who they were claiming to have murdered someone. The man indicates the warden said she had bewitched them. Sypha denies it, then back peddles to say she was defending her self as they might have wanted to attack her.   Leaving that conversation thread for a moment, the man tells her there have been reports of a group of a half dozen or so people running through town this morning, raiding peoples farms, breaking into barns, then just as quickly running off to the next farm. Sypha denies knowledge of this as well, indicating it must be teenagers playing pranks or some such stuff. At this point Sypha asks for this mans name, indicating if he gets these reports he must be of some importance.   The man tells her his name is Griffin. That he wears many a hat in this hamlet, just one of which is to be the local peacekeeper. This conversation was done as they walked toward the pub, it was now that they found themselves outside the door to that very business. Griffin holds the door open for Sypha and allows her to enter the pub before he joins her.   Inside the Pub   Just prior to Griffin entering the pub; Carilius, and Tycone attempt to flee out of the pub, using the kitchen as a means of egress. They are met by the cook Atznox blocking their path. Carilius tries to convince old Nox to let them through but has no success. Nox asks why they would need to do this, indicating if they not guilty of anything why do they run? Then when Carilius pushes for a path to leave the bar, he tells them to go out the side door through the rooms and not use the kitchen.   Looking around the room Griffin sees the two tables pushed together and the four other out of towners gathered there as well. The only others in the bar where three older men of the town, two at one table and the third by himself, the bartender Roni and the cook Nox. Griffin then asks Sypha if she is dining alone? She indicates she is with the friends at the two tables pushed together. Noting there are two more glasses and chairs then bodies he inquires to her if there is anyone else? Nope, that is all she lies to him yet again.   He then turns to the bartender and owner of the pub, Roni. Asking about the extra drinks, chairs and other signs of extra people. Roni tells him that the others just left out the backway a minute or so ago, just before he came into the pub. Griffin asks Sypha if she would care to restate any of the details of her story yet.   At this point, Malor, who had a bit of rapport from last night with Griffin steps in before Sypha hangs herself anymore. He tells of Baxtor, the wardens, and then attempts to convince Griffin of the trance-like state affecting the town. Griffin seems to have no direct memory of last nights events but does not seem to be buying the idea of the whole town being locked in the barn. This goes on for a bit until the goblins are mentioned. Then an all too familiar phrase is uttered by Griffin:
“We saw some goblins just the other day, sneaking around the barn, we made some noise and scared them off. Stuffs been missing of late it must be them.”
It spirals out for a bit as Malor tries as hard as he can to get Griffin, Roni, Nox or any other person in the bar to hear the others members of the town say the phrase. Without luck, as the townsfolk seem to block out hearing it, or themselves start to echo it back as well.   As Griffin bores of this line of talking he brings back the conversation to the crimes at hand. That there was a murder most foul, against members of the valley's road wardens. That Sypha was accused of practicing the dark arts in the streets. That there seems to be a good indication that the group is meddling in an investigation of the murder. That a group of out of town people at least 6 strong have been trespassing and breaking into the barns of the good folk of Pearford.   Griffin seems to see through all of this, despite his country slowness his mind was sharper than what Sypha was giving him credit for. This aside, Griffin then purposed that he place the group under arrest until he sorted out this and that with the wardens, as well figure out the meddling trespassers issue. This house arrest was needed to ensure that the group fell under his jurisdiction before the leader of the wardens came into the town. This would buy him time to call in Reece from Pine Grove to act as an arbitrator of justice over the issues presented here.   Malor and Sypha did not like the idea of being arrested. It was noted that "arrested" in Pearford, would mean being put up in the worst rooms of the Pub, and not being allowed to leave the building. Hellah and Sodryn being more inclined to accept tried to talk to the others while Griffin ordered breakfast. Raven seemed to care little and continued perched on the chair to look around.   When Griffin returned, he explained without them being in his custody, then the wardens would be in there right to arrest the group and be taken back to Pine Grove. With this Hellah agreed for the party to take the house arrest option before the rest of the group could find a reason to not accept.   Upriver, no paddle   Carilius and Tycone fled out the side of the Undermill Pub near the stables. A quick glance from the door showed nobody insight. They made off out the side of the tavern, and down the bank to the river, using the bank to stay out of sight they head north to the mountains figuring on going back to there camp from last night. It's slow and steady for about an hour, as they work there way upriver. It is at that point in time Carilius notices a rider trailing them to the south. Carilius and Tycone hide after they go past the next bend and lay in weight for the rider to catch up with them.   The rider, a road warden, slowly makes his way till he comes up to Tycone whos hiding attempt was not as good as Carilius. The rider stops to address the dragonborn. Carilius stays out of sight and keeps an eye on the situation. He notices a second rider, unseen until now, approach. Tycone is surrounded by the two riders on horseback, both are road wardens. The rear rider pulls his bow and aims at Tycone covering him as the front rider turns his back on Carilius to face the dragonborn.   "Dragon Warrior, you are under arrest for murder, lay down your arms and surrender." barks the front rider. To this Tycone refused, professing his innocents, that he will not drop his weapons for they will not honor it. Tycone and the warden go back and forth a few times, to allow him the opportunity to surrender his weapons. To no avail, upon a final warning, the warden advances on Tycone.   A battle ensues, Tycone with the first road warden, start exchanging blows. The second warden firing arrows at Tycone. Seeing the second warden firing into the battle, Carilius assists coming out of hiding, to cast spells at the first rider. As Carilius speaks words of power, we waves his hands as the sound of a dolorous bell can be heard. It takes a long minute for the battle to finish, the wardens both knocked out, Tycone bloody and breathing hard, but standing over the other two.   Dropping down and pulling his blade Tycone slices the throats of both wardens then begins to loot their bodies. Tycone piles up all the weapons and valuables from the riders before he gathers the warhorses as well. Cariliuses assists Tycone to hide the bodies iunder some bushes, and clean up the signs of there battle. Packing up the stolen horses Tycon and Carilius continue to ride north along the river.   End of Session...
