General informations on Moths
Physical appearance of Moths in Faelmon
Moths are a surprising sight in Faelmon from their size, their fours arms and the many patterns their wings can have. Moths are a rare kind of demon about the size of a teenager. Most of the time they are easy to spot with their fur-like hair, their long antennas and their immense wings. Very few of them have the ability to shape-shifting into a mortal and they struggle to adapt to their new fingers and lack of arms. Each of their fours hands have two fingers and a thumb. Their feet are very small, but perfect for climbing the scrawniest of trees. Their body looks like it is made of flesh, but they are made of solid chitin. They have large eyes and a long straw like tongue.
The physical differences within Moths
Moths have similar traits within them as they all have four arms, fours wings, two antennas and their chitin is covered by light freckles. Their sizes average 136 centimeters.
Some subtle differences can be noticed as for the length of their fur-like hair, the type of antennas they have and the shape of their wings. It is interesting to note they do not have an easy way to distinguish males from females as they do not have sexual dimorphism visible.
Differences within moths mostly come in the colors and the pattern of their wings. Some will have exotic colorations with mesmerizing patterns, some can have parts of their wings as clear as glass while others will have plain patterns and colors perfect for camouflage. As their wings can widely vary in colors, the powder covering them is always white is you remove it with your finger.
As for their chitin, colors can vary as well, sometimes complementing their wings, sometimes being quite different from expectations. It can be interesting to notice that some of them have fur-like hair on their arms and legs while others don't.
A rare occurrence within moths is when a moth is half and half. One side of them will be colorful while th other is duller. They do not know how this mutation happens, but they know it exists as a few of them exhibit this trait.
Ancestry
Moths are a fairly young species in Faelmon with strange origins. It is hard to say if they truly are demons, but they share many qualities with them such as longevity, incredible strength, dark vision, resistance to fire and affinity to magic. The lack of need to sleep everyday can be added to the list.
Contrary to other kinds of demon where it is hard to pinpoint their origins, moths are able to tell with certainty where they came from. They come from ancient rare mines of green crystals that have been hidden for who knows how long. In the last decades, some of them have been freed the dirt burying them, attracting normal moths to lay their eggs inside, away from predators and close the mentioned green crystals. Some strange magic must have emanated from those strange crystals as some moth eggs mutated and birthed the first Moth demons.
Since then, more came from those mysterious mines, but other came as Moths breeded. Strangely, they never went through the larva and pupae phases even if they come from eggs.
The powers of Moths
Moths are renowned for their incredible strength. Even with their small frame, they can easily lift 500 pounds. Although, they do not have defined magic abilities to them.
While some of them showed they could shape-shift into mortals, they stay as tall as their original size. Not all Moths are able of such exploit. While under a mortal form, they do feel handicapped with two arms missing.
Some were able to form flames or even lights thanks to the magic within them, but it doesn't look like it is their own power. Although, they show to be promising in magic thanks to the ones curious enough to explore this domain. They wish they could understand magic better since it produces wonderful lights and would love to show off to each other with complex show of colors and lights.
Culture of Moths
The culture of Moths is a nascent as they exist in Faelmon for only a few decades now. This doesn't mean they have nothing to build a community and a culture's foundations. People other than moths struggle to understand them as their vision on things can be quite strange or primitive to many.
Despite their new appearance in Faelmon, Moths managed to create their own language that can be spoken and understood only by them. Their language is mostly composed of signs made from their hands and antennas. To complete the complexity of their communication, they have a small array of sounds that no other races can reproduce. Although, they created the foundation of a writing system for themselves. It is not a conventional writing system using words, but what resemble pictures representing a concept. Understanding their writing system can be tricky at first, but not impossible to learn. Despite of their own system of language and writing, they are able to learn other languages. It is important to note that they prefer learning common as they find languages other than theirs weird and long to communicate. Thus, Moths have a name in their own language and one for usage with other races. It is hard to understand the convention of their name in what is referred as Mimic, the Moths' language, but for their other name system is simpler to understand. They either name themselves from something they like or sounds they like doing when using common.
Weirdly enough, Moths culture is based on lights. Even though they prefer living in the dark or at night, they love lights. They see light as something to respect and appreciate as it is source of life. Since they hatched near those strange green crystals, they feel like all light sources are something important, by being powerful, a source of life or simply as something beautiful. From this ideas, they collect lights of all kind to bring back to their "nest". May it be a candle, a lamp, gemstones, mirrors, etc. Everything that can produce or reflect lights is worthy to them. They do have a common collection of trinkets of all kinds, but they also have their own private collections. Monetary value means nothing to them. The brighter, the better.
Thus, Moths quickly became known to be fearsome warriors as they are ready to fight anything to put their hands on shiny things of all kinds. May it be demons, monsters, bandits or dragons, they don't care. Everything is worthy of fighting if they have lights Moths want to collect. As they say "A dragon's treasure is a Moth's envy". Fighting something bigger than them does not terrify them as they feel like sizes mean nothing. They know strength can be found in all sizes and respect that. Although, they understand other races, especially mortals, see dragons as some of the most powerful creatures to best in combat. So, they love to brag when they beat one.
Strangely enough, they don't see the concept of stealing like others do. They don't see it as something wrongful to do. In fact, they don't have terms for such action in their own language. They just see it as taking or collecting. Even if they understand the concept of individual possessions, gifts and trading, they don't see stealing as it is. If someone is not keeping their possessions safe or hidden, it is an open invitation to be taken. That doesn't mean all Moths are thieves or that they are even good at thievery.
With all that, it is important to remember that Moths' culture is still nascent, so open to many changes and free to evolve. They do integrate things they learn or see from other cultures, but with their own understanding. Some demon races see the potential in Moths to become one of the most powerful species of demons in Faelmon as they show promising potential.
The hiearchy of Moths
Their hiearchy is quite simple. The Moths with the most "lights" are superiors while those with the less "lights" are inferiors. Therefore, their hiearchy is shifting quite often. Also, those contributing the most to the communal collection increases their reputations. Although, it is not always easy to see which ones are superiors or inferiors as they do not always wear "lights" on them. You have to see their collection to be certain of it.
Since they caught the interest of some Arch-demons, they serve Mathamaru the Collector and Tricc the Hunter who accepted to become their guardians in the mortal realm as they are yet to make their place in hell. As their guardian are curious of how far they can go, they teach them as much as they can about Faelmon, the different kinds of demons and magic. Moths do not need protection like the other races of demons living in the mortal realm, but are gracious of the credibility they guardians bring to them. For now, they are seen more as guide than leaders.
