Personal history

Matilda's father died in 1168 when she was a minor. For the next nine years the office of Warden was performed in her stead by Reynold de Lucy, a relative of Richard de Lucy, Chief Justiciar under King Henry II, while Matilda and her mother were wards of the Crown.3   When she came of age in 1177 her hand (and thus her inheritance) was offered to Ralph Fitzstephen, a royal justice and senior royal official two decades her senior, and her lands and the office of Warden passed to them both upon their marriage.
