The Judges of the Dead

Aeacus, Minos and Rhadamanthus are the Judges of the Underworld, responsible for deciding the fate of the souls of the dead. They are tasked with analysing the deeds of the dead and sending them to either the Asphodel Meadows, the Fields of Punishment or Elysium.   The Judges are one of the caretakers of the Underworld, assisting Hades and Persephone in the management of the Lands of the Dead. The Judges of the Dead are guardians of the keys of Hades. They are always treated as one entity, though individually, Aeacus is the Lord of Asphodel, Minos, the Lord of the Damned and Rhadamanthus the Lord of Elysium.   It is said that the judges were once the sons of Zeus, mortal kings that were rewarded for keeping law and order across the mortal world.   Like Chthonic Deities, due to the Judges’ association with the Underworld and death, they are rarely referred to by name, as it was believed it would call their attention. Therefore they are almost always referred to by epithets, such as the Judges of the Dead, the Underworld, Hades or the Damned.

Appearance:

The Judges are exclusively depicted as male, resembling their appearance in life. Aeacus and Rhadamanthus are both depicted as elderly Elves with olive skin, white curly hair and long beards. While Minos is depicted as a middle aged Elf with the same olive skin but with black curly hair and a shorter beard.   All three Judges always appear dressed in finery and gold, wielding royal sceptres. They are also commonly ghost-like in appearance.
