Apophis - One Who Devours

Apophis, sometimes called Typhon, is the God of Destruction, and the progenitor of Serpents. Apophis is one of the Dark Deities and one of the two "Lords of Chaos", a pair of Evil Primordial Gods of Chaos that pursue the utter annihilation of the universe.

Apophis is the embodiment and personification of destruction and chaos. It is said that Apophis desires nothing more than to consume all of creation, with one of the most common depiction of Apophis being it swallowing the sun.

Apophis is often associated with its sibling Tartarus, the God of Corruption. Together the two Primordial Deities are known as the "Lords of Chaos", dual deities of evil and chaos. Both Apophis and Tartarus are said to have first appeared during the early years of Creation, where they attempted to destroy the Gods and bring an end to all of creation. After being defeated by the Gods, Apophis was imprisoned within the Plane of Chaos, from where it first sprang forth.

While the Gods maintain Apophis’ prison, keeping it trapped away, Apophis is said to be relentlessly trying to escape. Even while imprisoned, Apophis continually attempts to spread it's influence across creation, from creating the Lamia cultists, to allying with Tartarus, Gaia and Echidna to create and release terrible and devastating monsters to terrorise the Planes.

Because Apophis' evil and destructive nature, and because it is one of the Dark Deities, Apophis is usually only referred to by epithets, such as the “One Who Devours” or the “Great Serpent”, as to avoid invoking it or drawing its attention.

Worship

Apophis is not worshipped outside of specific villainous or doomsday cults, such as the Cult of the Serpent, who are primarily composed of Lamia and believe that the Serpent is the ultimate state of being, going so far as to mutate themselves into monstrous forms to appear more like their Patron Deity.

Apophis is also prominently worshipped by the violent Salamanders of the Elemental Plane of Fire.

Appearance

Apophis is commonly depicted as a gargantuan, planet size snake, usually a cobra, with black or red scales, fiery red eyes and veins of magma running through their scales. Apophis' serpent form sometimes depicted with a pair of large feathered or Dragon-like wings.

Apophis is also sometimes depicted as a colossal winged giant, with scaled skin, two coiled serpents in place of legs, a hundred serpent-heads for fingers, a filthy, matted beard, fiery red eyes, and a mouth of boiling fire that could shoot forth flame.

Personality

While Primordial Deities are usually rather mysterious and unknowable, Apophis is consistently depicted as a chaotic and evil being, a cruel and malevolent Deity, who desires for nothing but the destruction and total annihilation of the universe.

But unlike its sibling Tartarus, Apophis is said to be more patient and cunning, influencing and turning followers to it's cause through lies and false promises, driving them to cruelty and destruction, slowly destroying societies from within, all in the aim of Apophis' eventually escape.
