Abyss
Tartarus (Tartaros) is one of the Divine Planes and the home of origin for Demons. The Plane is named after it's leader, the Primordial Deity Tartaros, but as to avoid invoking Tartaros, the Plane is more colloquially known as the Abyss, or just the Pit.
The Abyss is a realm of chaos and violence, where only the strong survive. Demons swarm across every corner of the Plane, and the landscape itself tortures the mind and body of all who dared to pass through it.
It is said that the Abyss was created during the early years of Creation, bursting forth it's Demonic spawn into the Universe at the same times as the birth of the Primordial Tartaros, who is believed to be intimately tied to the Plane. Tartaros is said to have been imprisoned within the Abyss by the Gods, but some have speculated that the Abyss may actually be the true body of Tartaros itself.
Geography
The Abyss is vast and perplexing, filled with a myriad of subterranean caverns and otherworldly biomes, such as fleshy caves, never-ending pits, lakes of toxic water, lands of acid spewing geysers, forests of giant supernatural mushrooms, and rivers of ooze, all connected haphazardly without logic or reason.
The whole realm is ever shifting and ever changing, tunnels and passageways moving and vanishing, the walls sometimes fleshy and undulating, leading to the theory that the very realm may be alive. Maddening screams, groans and roars echo through the caverns, leaving travellers perpetually on edge.
Knowledge of the Abyss is incredibly limited, as expeditions to the Plane usually end in death or failure, leaving the whole realm almost completely unexplored and unmapped. Many scholars have speculated that the Abyss may actually be unmappable, with other theories suggesting that the Abyss may be infinite in scale.
Identified regions of the Abyss include the Fungal Wilds, a vast forest of giant otherworldly mushrooms and rot, the Toxic Barrens, a vast and barren land filled with pools and rivers of toxic ooze, and the Spiral Pit, a vast and endless pit that descends deep into the Abyss, the land around the it curving like a spiral, leading deeper and deeper. The Spiral Pit is theorised to be the heart of the Abyss, with it being one of the only locations recorded by multiple expeditions.
The top of the Spiral Pit is speculated to be the location of the Maw, the highest level of the Plane and a gaping portal that leads onto the first layer of the Hells, Eremus. The Maw is used by the Demonic horde who constantly swarm out of the Abyss, where they are met by the brutal fighting of the Immensus War.
And while unexplored, the bottom of the Spiral Pit, the lowest level of the Abyss, is theorised to be Pandemonium, the location where the Primordial Deity Tartaros is believed to reside, and the place from which all Demons are born.
Time
Time within the Abyss can sometimes become dilated or distorted. While traversing the Abyss you may encounter pockets of Time distortion, where Time feels like it's moving fast or slower, but on average Time usually feels like it is flowing normally.
But upon leaving the Abyss, it can turn out that more Time has passed that you actually experienced, sometimes on the order of weeks, months, or even years longer than expected. While in other cases it is possible for little or no Time to have passed instead.
The more extreme ends of Time distortion are uncommon, but it is not unprecedented. Fortunately Spells and other enchantments have been developed in order to counteract this distortion, lessening the possibility of the more extreme results.
