Inspiration comes in a few ways.
a) There was once an advert appearing in the Times of London that use to advertise the Explorer Society meeting at the usual time and place on a certain date. And occasionally updates of an exploration of some very remote part of the world showing where the explorers were now and what they had done Since the last update. It turned out that they were all false and it was actually just someone imagining from their living room and continuing the rouse for about 30 years in the newspaper. Love him.
b) My Friend Andrew, who is actively trying to visit every country in the world. His pictures, be they from the Central African Republic, or Kurdistan are always full of wonders I will never get to see. He is my inspiration for my future worldwide world wanderer character.

c) Some classics like Treasure Island and Wind in the Willow created wonderful imaginary worlds with lots of danger but not a lot of death.
d) Modern worldbuilding Sagas such as Riftwar Cycle, Shannara, Wheel of Time, Dragonlance Chronicles, and other epic books like A Passage to India, Centenial and Caravans bring the locations to life in full imaginary vigour and colour.
