Window to a New World

Summer 2021, Week 2

Tuesday morning

Royal Metro Library, Old Towne

Luna

The young girl finds the library rather quickly, having been here before when she first came to this world. She didn't have her equipment back then so it was harder to tell she was not just some little girl without speaking with her for some time, so those who had seen her before might not recognize her at first. She goes up to the main desk and calls out to the first librarian she finds. "Excuse me, is the Wi-Fi password still the same as it was a year ago?"

Lavrentia

The librarian looks up, surprised to see a kid come in and know the Wi-Fi, and that they remember from being there a year ago. As a matter of fact... Lavrentia does remember the kid, at least a little bit. They nod. "For the most part, it's just instead of it being RoyMetLib20 it's now RoyMetLib21. If the calendar changes the password changes." They shrug. "If you need other help, please let me know! Not many younger kids are usually so comfortable in the library."

Luna

"I basically grew up in one, so I'm pretty used to places like this. Thanks!" she says excitedly before running off and finding a chair that was somewhat out of the way. Back when she used to come here before she would always be using the public computers for hours on end, and eventually she started bringing in her own laptop and just using the Wi-Fi. This time though instead of pulling out a laptop she instead pulls her strange hood down partially over her face, just enough to cover her eyes. Then she starts tapping and swiping at the air slightly and a light coming from under the hood can be seen shifting in contrast, brightness, and even color. It was as if she had a computer built into the hoodie that she was now interacting with. Whatever it was that she was doing it was apparent that she was working with purpose as the swiftness of her gestures only seemed to increase, a strange amount of determination that is almost as strange as her getup.

Lavrentia

They smile at the enthusiasm only kids have, that goes away sometime during the high school years. Keeping half an eye on the child while they do other various librarian tasks, they note that it seems the kid is using....well, not a personal or library computer, that's for sure. Storing it away for later, they give about an hour and a half before coming by. "Hard at work? Or hardly working?" They chuckle. "Would you like a snack? We have plenty."

Luna

She looks up at them without moving the hood from her face, the cartoonish eyes on the outside of it that seemed about where her real eyes would be revealing a faint red glow at their center. After a second, she grins widely. "Working hard. The details are classified..." she says in a partly joking tone, “...but right now I'm coding a new program! And I brought food with me, if that's okay." she says, pulling out a white paper bag out of her backpack.

Lavrentia

They smile and nod. They are perhaps less weirded out than their co-workers would be, which is why they came over. "If you run out, let me know, the library is open for about 4 more hours, and I'm here until close." They make their way around, seeming natural, and speaking softer. "If you need Evo help, there is a spot on the third floor, hard to miss, and a bit more private than the main room." At a more normal volume, "There are some great books in that series, you'll have to tell me how you find the ending." Great cover, kids love to read still, right? Then, simply, they move to the rest of their duties.

Luna

The girl smiles in response but doesn't say anything further, going back to her swiping and taping in the air, occasionally pulling out a strip of some kind of fried food and munching on it. After another half hour or so she gets up and makes her way to the stairs, headed for the third floor.   The girl finds her way to the room the librarian mentioned, a curious look on her face the entire time as she had never gone to this floor of the building before. If she finds the place to be empty when she gets there, she finds a place to sit down and begins to fiddle with her computer again while she waits though she does not seem to be working as hard as she was before.

Lavrentia

The librarian comes up about half an hour after the girl, with books not necessarily about her power, but new Evo books they just got in. They also bring some water and soda, not knowing how much if any caffeine or sugar the child is allowed to have, and not wanting to set off any sugar highs on accident.

Luna

"Hi!" she says, quickly raising her hood so they could see each other normally. "Thanks for what you did but you didn't have to do that, lots of people already know about me. Hard to hide and act normal when you come from another world and have to do exceptional things to get money to live off of." She takes the water, seemingly disinterested in the other drink.

Lavrentia

"Ah, but I don't know about you. Not that I want to - I know, stranger danger, all that, but it's better to err on the side of caution when dealing with non Evos." They take the soda and have a sip. "Another world, huh? That's pretty cool. I'd love to hear the differences sometime." They smile. "And being normal is overrated anyways. Everyone has a notion of the word, and it's different for every single person. I can't imagine the differences between worlds let alone cities or families." They chuckle. "So hard at work, but not for school, I'm guessing?"

Luna

"Like I said, the details are classified," she says with a smile. "But if you want, I can show you the differences between our worlds. I can't quite travel between the two worlds at will yet, but I can open a window big enough to see through easily enough. Wanna see?"

Lavrentia

They nod eagerly, excited to learn new things. "Yes, please, that sounds quite interesting!" They smile. "Maybe one day, you can get strong enough to travel, and you can find a permanent link between our two worlds, where anyone can travel there." They sit back, eager for even a glimpse at something new.

Luna

"I'm not sure if many people would like it there, but you'll see." She holds her hands out in front of her, and almost immediately a small orb of light appears between her palms. The orb expands slowly in four directions until it splits into a ring shape, stopping once it reaches the size of a half-dollar. Within the ring a strange scene can be observed, a flat and barren field of dirt and stone stretches on as far as the eye can see. In the distance a tower can be seen stretching up from behind the horizon, and in several areas various animals can be seen roaming. It isn't until one of these creatures, a small bird, flies by closely that one could make out the mechanical parts.

Lavrentia

"How interesting! Mechanical animals. Are any like the ones here, flesh and bone? Or are they more or less all mechanical?" They ask, excited even more. "Thank you for showing me this, it can provide a lot of insight for you, and your world, as well as ours. My abilities are basically a walking encyclopedia, people tell me their story, I write it down, and I can share it with others as well."

Luna

"All the ones I've seen from my world have been mechanical, I didn't even know there could be animals like us until I first saw this world." she says as the portal closes and she lowers her arms. "Wait, if you take down the stories of Evos... have you ever met someone like me before? An otherworlder?" She had an expectant look, as if she was hoping for a certain answer.

Lavrentia

"Sure, ok. I don't know if they come from your world, but apparently gravity can shift slightly between worlds, even if earth is earth, there are going to be different events that makes it your earth, or my earth. Just because some names are the same, and some people share them, if, for instance, you had a George Washington, there's no guarantee he accomplished the same things at the same time ours did, and that difference in days is surprisingly important." They pause, flipping through their book. "I need a little bit more information on your powers to maybe help you out, but as every Evo is a little bit different, what helps them might need to be differently tailored to you."

Luna

"I'm not really sure if my world is another earth or another world entirely, we've never found other people and we don't exactly have any records of our worlds history..."

Lavrentia

"Well, whatever it is, you have similar oxygen, which is good." They smile. "It is just fine not to know everything; I don't know everything either! And it's my job to help you know more things." They pause. "Have you searched any of this planet’s history? It's quite interesting, and I can start you off with either adult or child aimed books - not that you would be unable to understand the adult ones, but the child ones use more language you might be used to."

Luna

"I've only been here for a few years total, but I've already read a lot about the history. It's actually kind of amazing how much you've managed to record over the years. Makes me wonder if maybe there are libraries out there in my world filled with similar amounts of knowledge that we just haven't been able to find."

Lavrentia

"Maybe one day you'll be strong enough to go back and look. Or maybe you have someone you can contact over there who can look for you." They smile. "So far, what's been reasonably accurately recorded is only 6000-7000 years old, when writing became more widespread and used. Humans have been around a lot longer than that, and some nations are so accurate in their oral traditions - speaking and telling stories - that they have stories kept alive for 20,000 years or more!"

Luna

"I hope I can go back... I like it here, but I miss my sister." She gets a sadder look on her face for a bit before she shakes it off. "But that's why I'm going to become an AERI. I can help people and try to improve my abilities at the same time!"

Lavrentia

"I heard a little bit about that program, mostly that it's for people like us to help people of everyone else including us, right? I don't watch the news as much as I perhaps should." They shrug. "If you're a part of it, then that's exciting! We're bound to be significantly safer." They grin at the child, in no way condescending to them. From what the kid told them, they know the city will be improved in many ways just based off of the technology alone.

Luna

"Yeah, essentially! And that's the plan, anyway." She smiles slightly.

Lavrentia

"Well, it's getting close enough to closing time, I should go work on some of that. Do you have any more questions before I go?"

Luna

"No, that's okay. I'll let you get back to things. Thanks for talking with me though!" she says, her smile turning into a grin as she stood back up.

Lavrentia

The librarian gives a small salute and heads back down the stairs, leaving the girl to do what she needed.
