Danger, Librarian Lavrentis, Danger!

Summer 2021, Week 3

Friday afternoon

Royal Metro Library, Old Towne

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Heading to the Evo room, as directed by the librarian up front, Laslow casually walked, taking in details of any vantage points he could watch from without being quite so visible to the casual observer. Dressed in his 'casual' wear of a plain tee shirt, jeans and a black baseball cap, he hoped to not be recognized by anyone that he managed to let slip away. Maybe this place will have some worthwhile abilities for me to try on. His gaze focuses, searching for any interesting people with that familiar static around them, his pupils narrowing into predatory, reptilian slits.
[Type 2, Basic, 15/15 EP]
Looking about, he spies one individual that appears to be relaxing with a book in a comfortable looking chair. He tilts his head to the side curiously, tuning into the static that surrounded them to get a better read of what they were capable of.
[Type 2, Normal, -3EP, 12/15]
...Interesting. he thinks as he stares intensely toward this person.

Lavrentis

The librarian noticed the newcomer arrive, looking around the room. Rather a bit too intently to be polite, if they were going to be honest about it, but they paid no mind for several minutes, engrossed in the story, and storing the information in a small notebook beside them.
[Type 1, basic, -0EP]
After those few minutes, however, they look back up at him. "Is there something I can help you with, sir?" They aren't intending to be rude, but they also don't like feeling like they are on display like a zoo animal.

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Smiling and attempting to mask whatever intent could be perceived from him, he replies "My apologies, I should have asked permission before I observe." He approaches an armchair near the librarian as the pupils in his icy blue eyes return to their normal state. "I've recently discovered that I have a unique talent, and merely wished to develop it." Smirking now, and raising an eyebrow, he takes a seat near them and adds, "Though, I can assume you can figure out that much on your own, be it intuition or that unique ability of your own."

Lavrentis

They notice the eye change, looking directly at him, but say nothing, as it could be a point of contention for him. "Well, what branch seems to have the most information of your power? Every shelf, or group of shelves, has information. Tit for tat, hm?" They say smirking. "Mine deals with knowledge." They hold up the small book they were writing in. "Many, much knowledge. And if you allow me to shake your hand, I can tell you about yourself as well."

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Grinning, he replies "Mine would be best described as reading and interacting with other powers." He extends his hand towards them, and adds, "May I have your name? I prefer Chad for myself, personally." Mainly because I want to remain a ghost to New Victoria...

Storyteller

A young man who had been in the library for some time reading a book gets up from his seat shortly after hearing the librarian give the direction to Laslow, waiting just long enough that it wouldn't look suspicious. Or so he hoped, but it was uncertain how effective the man was with espionage. He makes his way to a spot just outside the room but not too close to the door and sits down, opening his book once more. Though rather than return to reading the man closes his eyes and slows down his breathing, doing his best to block out any smells and tastes. As he does, the sounds come to him; He can hear whispers of people throughout a chunk of the library, and he can hear two voices much more clearly than the rest as they are close by. He focuses in on the two voices and does his best to ignore the rest. The first thing he hears is the line 'Mine deals with knowledge.'.

Lavrentis

"Today, I am Lavrentis. I am the head librarian here - for both the whole library and also the evolved human section." They smile. "That sounds quite interesting...as well as quite compatible with mine, surprisingly. With a brief conversation and a touch of the hand I can tell you your powers, and whether anyone up to your grandparents had. Given the shape of the world, well," they shrug, "it accounts for adoptions as well."

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Hearing these words, he slightly recoils his hand with hesitation, maintaining his pleasant facade. Is it really worth losing my cover? Surely, I can find another person with an ability less... revealing. "That is... quite interesting." He fully retreats his hand, deciding that despite that hunger and desire for power, it isn't worth revealing so much to someone without ensuring they stay quiet with a little blackmail. Thinking he is already so close to being ousted, and by a kid no less, it was time to avoid being touched like a plague by the librarian in front of him until he could secure some information to hold against them, or possibly make a threat to keep them quiet.   He forces his face to be one of curiosity, still wanting to hide that his interest lay in self-preservation rather than true inquisitive intent. "And I was able to detect... well, the essentials of what you can do. Though the subtle details of how it works are still beyond what I can grasp by myself, at least so far." As a diversion to distract from the retreat of his hand, he turns his eyes into those predatory slits once more, peering around for other people to help demonstrate what he is capable of.
[Type 2, Basic x1, -0EP]
"It seems I still need a direct line of sight to see, but in this state I'm capable of detecting whether or not someone is an evolved human. To me, they seem to have a sort of... aura of static around them. I can further focus on one individual and see what kind of power they appear to have. For example:" He turns and looks down an aisle, towards an individual that had the familiar static around them. Focusing further, at first for demonstration's sake, focuses slightly on them to detect the primary ability they might have.
[Type 2, Minor x1, -1EP, 11/15]
"That individual has some sort of bodily enhancement centered around their skin. I can further focus on that static so it may tell me what is a brief summary of what that power can do." Focusing even further on the static, his eyes begin to glow in the cold blue color of his irises, detecting exactly as he explained.
[Type 2, Normal x1, -3EP, 8/15 remaining]
"Their enhancement seems to be focused on durability, so a normal impact or injury would have less of an effect if he were to be aware of such a thing and prepare his skin accordingly. As it seems focused on his skin at this time, any concussive force would still shatter bone if enough of said force made a direct hit."

Lavrentis

They nod, excited at the prospect of learning more. "Would you mind if I wrote this down? I tend to keep my notebook for consulting when other folks come in and have no clue about their new abilities. I can impart the knowledge necessary, as well as point them to the shelves that will be perhaps more fruitful." They smile. "I do, of course, tend to keep these things anonymous - if you're worried about that, I can just mention the vaguest aspects of you, for example, 'this man,' or 'this person,' or some other such stuff." They shrug. "It is no difference to me - I enjoy sharing knowledge for the sake of it, which is why I'm here, in one of the most knowledge filled buildings around." They turn to look more fully at him. "Perhaps, for you, you might want to review some manners - not everyone who comes here would be particularly open to being stared at, no matter their secrets that they themselves don't yet know."

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

He tries not to scoff in response to the suggestion, his eyes returning to normal. People will watch other people whether it's polite or not. What's the harm if I'm not going to actively hurt anyone while I'm here? Managing a friendly smile rather than a smirk, he turns his attention back to Lavrentis and ponders the advice a moment before nodding. Though I suppose they do make a point. Flies and honey.   "I'd appreciate anonymity, but you can put 'Chad' down in your book. And I can try and keep in mind not to stare so much, Lavrentis. I wouldn't want to come across as rude, but sometimes my... curiosity gets the better of me." He moves to stand, adding "I can see about stopping by every now and then, in case there are some people curious about themselves and you're busy. I can even leave a number if they want to arrange a visit." I finally have a use for that spare phone

Lavrentis

They nod. "Chad it is, then." They smile. "That would be excellent, actually - while more people are figuring out what they can do, sometimes it helps to have someone who safely acknowledges it and can help them figure it out as well." They pause a moment, "it also helps that you can find out what they can do - another evolved human who can see what other people are capable of is helpful, but I still have my aspect where I can determine which side of the family had more of the gene involved in evolving us. Currently back to grandparents, but with time and effort I'm sure I can take it back even farther." They go grab one of the numerous slips of paper left around for note taking and a pen, handing it to him. "A phone or also an email - and I'll do my best to keep the calls between 9 and 5, Monday through Friday. No need to have you feel as though you're on call."

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

"Still, every little bit can help, yes?" Grinning wide, he takes the pen and paper, writing down his name and the phone number before stating "I'd probably have to get back to you with an email address. It might be helpful to have a separate account dedicated to this purpose." Shrugging at the mention of calling hours, he explains, "I don’t mind. I'm used to being up at various hours, day and night. Though I can let you know if I'm on an assignment that might interfere with those times, if you prefer."   Handing back the pen and paper to Lavrentis, he continues to grin. "Hopefully someday I will be able to discern those intricacies of each ability. I can appreciate the history, but I like to be able to dissect the information I can find to see how it works rather than why. It can help prepare for the future, and that information can be reverse engineered to help understand the why as well." He extends his hand for a handshake. "I think this is the beginning of a good partnership, Lavrentis."

Boogeyman

T̴̀̋à̸͛k̷̈́͘ȩ̴̓

Lavrentis

They nod. "I think so, too. It will be a good chance for both of us to practice and hone our abilities together as they are surprisingly well meshed together." They grin widely. "Plus, we can help countless other folks figure out themselves - it may take time for them to acknowledge who they are, but they will know at the very least." They look at him. "Are you planning on attending the concert this evening? It can get a bit loud for me, so I'm staying home, but I might listen to it on the radio or news channel."

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

His smile sours ever so slightly into a grimace at the mention of a concert. "No, I will not. I'm not a fan of pop or punk music, really, so I will be enjoying the quiet this evening, possibly some Sabaton or Powerwolf for me." The smile returns to his face once more.

Storyteller

Someone who can view powers like the librarian, but also interact with them? Like Conspiratus does or something else? I should send this guy to him. The man listening in opens his eyes and quickly gets up to find his way back to his original seat. He waits there, returning to his book as he does, for Laslow to leave the building.

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Satisfied with the outcome of his venture, he bids the librarian farewell, and ventures his way to main doors of the library. A shame that the thrill of the chase is taken out, but I suppose I can wait patiently as I hunt other powers. Waiting for them to fly into a web need not be so boring. Not noticing that he is being observed, he exits the library.
St. Boltoph, Old Towne

Storyteller

As Laslow leaves the Royal Metro Library, the young man that had been listening in to the conversation between him and the librarian gets up to follow shortly after. He gives it just a few seconds before following out the door, not wanting to lose the stranger but also not wanting to draw attention to himself just yet. He takes a deep breath before going into a breathing pattern using short inhales through the nose and single but quick exhales through the mouth so that he could maximize the amount of time he spent breathing in and focus on the scents around him constantly. He tries to memorize the scent of the man he is following and focus on it in particular, while also keeping track of his footsteps. Once he has a handle on his target's location using both senses, he lets Laslow disappear around a corner and follows as close as he can without being within line of sight. All of this assuming he isn't spotted by his quarry in the process... Elusive, evasive, persistent; Righteous traits for a rogue, though the young man had yet to train these traits extensively.

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Taking the long route to his car and keeping to his usual habit of taking sudden corners and turns to put any would-be pursuants into a state of unease, he himself has the gut feeling that he is being watched. And me leaving my gear in the car... This could be bad if my gut is right. Maintaining his normal pace, his eyes form the telltale slits once more, quickly glancing as he makes more turns, taking a path that snakes around in a loop now.
[Type 2, Basic x1, -0EP (8/15)]
I am not prey, and I'm still not helpless, either. He thinks as he turns one corner, and quietly ducks behind, poising himself for an ambush while listening for any telltale signs of footfalls from around the corner.

Storyteller

The man was locked onto Laslow once he had attuned himself to the scent and sound, so he made extra certain to remain behind the corner and out of sight until Laslow had turned another corner. He had studied the layout of the city well, even before his arrangement with the one that give him these senses, and so he was always mindful of where they were as he was led along. He's circling around? Does he know I'm following him?   Just after he turns onto the path to continue following, he notices that his target had stopped just around the next corner and quickly the man returns to the previous one, leaving only a single street and an awkward silence between the two of them. Looking around, he sees that the streets in this area are almost entirely empty. As good a place as any, I guess... Screw it.   "I'm not here to cause you any harm, I just want to talk. I have an offer for you, if you'll hear it." the man says just loud enough for Laslow to hear clearly without having to shout it.

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

So... I was being tailed, after all. "I'm listening." He replies coolly, easing out of his stance but remaining out of sight. He adds a bluff, "Though I hope your offer won't conflict with any of my other contracts, unless you or likely your benefactor can do better for me."

Storyteller

"I know enough about you to know you want as many opportunities to use your powers as you can get." he responds, not entirely sure of his statement but he does his best to sound confident in what he's assuming. As he continues, he steps out from around his corner. "My employer can provide such opportunities... so long as you are willing, and able, to be equally useful to them in return. And I can personally assure you of their credibility in that statement."

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

"Consider my interest piqued." He replies as he rounds his own corner narrowing his eyes to preemptively tune in to any possible static. And what greets him leaves him with an expression betraying his confusion, curiosity, and just a small hint of... fear.
[Type 2, Normal x1, -3EP (5/15)]
"What in the ever-loving fuck with a barbed baseball bat is this?" He questioned under his breath as he tries to process what he is seeing. What should normally be an aura of static was instead a jumbled mess of three, each with its own unique set of movements and patterns. The individual could see the slitted pupils dilate and contract wildly, trying to discern what they were attempting to see.

Storyteller

The pursuer, who now that Laslow gets a look at him appears to be a young man with blonde hair, blue eyes, and somewhat tanned complexion, smirks a bit at the reaction. "My power is not my own. I wanted to see the world more clearly and so my employer offered me a fraction of their power which greatly enhanced my senses. In return, I use that power to assist them in whatever way I can. I'm sure whatever you are seeing is a result of that. If you want to know more, or if you want to seek a similar arrangement of mutual benefit, then go to the highest peak within the city and speak with my employer directly. Tonight, at midnight. No sooner and no later." he says and then promptly walks back behind the corner, attempting to walk away and give Laslow little time to respond further.

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Left to digest the information given to him, his eyes revert back to normal once more, furrowing his brow and shaking his head almost in disbelief. Not his own? Offering power? As in a bestowal? He scowls and starts on his way to his car once more. 'Tonight at midnight' and 'highest peak in the city' the stranger said. Did he mean actual peaks? Or possibly the highest point in the city? Resuming a long, winding path to his car, he continues to ponder the proposal. If he meant the highest point, that would be that building in Priory Park... He continues to wonder as he quietly makes his way to the car.

Storyteller

Sometime later, the young man that had listened in on the conversation earlier returns to the library, making his way quickly back to the room where he had heard the conversation. He knocks on the door and awaits a response before entering.

Lavrentis

The librarian looks up, answering "The room is open to everyone," before going back to their notebook, finishing the basics of what 'Chad' had told them, eager for the next meeting already.

Storyteller

The man walks in and scans his surroundings briefly, looking to see if any other people were currently in the room with them before walking up to the librarian. "I have some questions for you" he says as he gets closer.

Lavrentis

There were a few in the room, but most were getting ready to do whatever prep they wanted for the concert, whether that was going there or getting away from there. "You've come to the right place. How can I help?"

Storyteller

"I understand that you keep your discussions confidential when asked, but I am hoping you will make an exception. I need to know everything you can tell me about the man you met with earlier today, the one who's power is similar to your own. I can make it worth your while, of course." he says, pulling out a roll of hundred-dollar bills. "I'm sure as head librarian you own this place, and that certainly has its costs."

Lavrentis

"It's a public library, sir, and even if it were okay, I probably wouldn't say more than the name he gave - Cody. I only give that, so I don't worry about saying it later." They narrow their eyes slightly. "What is it that two rude people have visited me today?" They drop their voice slightly. "Is it because of the concert...?" They speak normally again. "What right do you have to demand this information of me?"

Storyteller

The man quickly pockets the cash again, smirking slightly. "It was merely a request; I am not here to make demands of you. I suppose you could say that was a bit of a test, and I'm glad to say you passed. You even gave a fake name to protect the person while throwing me off the trail with false information. Quick thinking and integrity are key traits my employer looks for in people that they associate with, and this shows you have both. I apologize for any offense caused in the process of testing you in this way, but my employer can never be too careful."

Lavrentis

They sit back slightly, back still ramrod straight. "Why does your employer have an interest in me? Sure, I am evolved, but there are countless more of us emerging every day. What is it your employer wants from me, an otherwise ordinary, if bright, librarian?"

Storyteller

"You undersell yourself; you have a rather unique capability. Many evolved persons have the ability to control physical things or an enhanced aspect of their body or mind, but your ability to document and share knowledge is one that has not been seen before by my employer. A rarity among a category of powers that is already rare in and of itself. Further, it is an ability that has a potential synergy with the ability held by my employer. If you'd like to hear more, my employer would love to speak with you personally."

Lavrentis

"Just because I am among the first by no means foretells me being the only one with such an ability." They sigh softly, intrigued, but also still slightly peeved. "All right, I'll bite. Is your employer a public figure? Will I know of them when I meet with them? You can't just give me an address, or a meeting place, and a time, and expect me to go blindly into this thing."

Storyteller

"Of course, you will surely not be the only one, but you are the only one that is known to us currently, and likely the only one we will discover for quite some time. My employer wishes to remain anonymous to all those outside of their inner circle, even I do not know their true name... But the fact that you are highly valued is made most evident by this proposition; My employer would like to offer you a place within that inner circle and would like to discuss this offer with you in person. The details are enclosed in this message." The man pulls a small letter out of his pocket and presents it to the librarian. The envelope is unmarked, and within is a single piece of paper which reads as follows:
Greetings. I sincerely apologize for the nature of this invitation, but I needed to be sure I could trust you. I'm sure you can understand, given that you had to pass several tests to be given this note and so you must be suitably cautious about this offer. To put oneself in a vulnerable state is a sign of either carelessness or trust, and trust given too lightly is simply carelessness by another name. And so I hope you can understand that I am not ready to reveal my identity to you, but I want you to feel at ease about meeting with me regardless, so I offer you this: Choose a location, a date, and a time that you feel most comfortable with and write it down on the back of this page before resealing the letter and returning it to my messenger. We shall meet at that location face to face and discuss what we can offer each other in greater detail. For now, I can assure you that there is much potential knowledge to be gained from a meeting with me. Perhaps a teaser of such knowledge will spark your curiosity... The man standing before you holds my power, a power that I gave to him temporarily. A power that I could choose to give to him permanently if I so wished. Using your abilities, you should be able to confirm that he has no history of evolved persons in his family line, and by this time tomorrow he will show no signs of having a power at all. If you meet with me, I promise you that I shall describe my power to you in full for you to document for your own purposes. All I ask in return is that you hear me out. A generous trade considering the circumstances, is it not? I look forward to your response and our potential meeting, Conspiratus

Lavrentis

Though their power works best through touch, they had enough time with the person in front of them to be able to focus slightly and see that this Conspiratus has indeed spoken true.
[Normal, as no or minimal physical contact, -3EP, 12/15]
Turning the page over, they write the address of a particular spot in Briar Park - one of a series of whimsical statues - for Tuesday the following week, at 6 pm. Then they return the letter to the envelope and return the envelope to the man, and nod. "I will hear your employer out, at least to sate my curiosity. The details are inside as instructed. Is there anything else you need in the library?"

Storyteller

He takes the envelope promptly. "No, that concludes my business here today. I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me." he says, giving a slight bow immediately afterwards before turning to leave.

Saturday midnight

Priory Park, Downtown

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Taking in a deep breath, and slowly exhaling, he waits and listens for any tells of anyone approaching, staying away from the edges of the building and behind the doorway for the stairwell down, the wind whipping around him making it difficult to hear. Likely both that guy and his employer will be coming, if not more. This is stupid. I shouldn't have exposed myself like this. All it would take is a telekinetic shove, or one wrong move to wind up dead. Why did I expose myself like this?

Boogeyman

M̴͂̕o̵͆͘o̵͎͑o̵͌́r̸̛̗e̷͋̐...

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Grimacing, he shakes his head towards his own folly.

Conspiratus

"You've taken a great risk in coming here alone." a distorted voice calls out to him from the other side of the roof. "Either you made a reckless choice which could get you killed, or you have a trick as of yet unrevealed... I wonder which it is. Regardless, today it is a risk that garners an equivalent reward."   Standing on the corner of the building is a robed individual wearing a strange white mask. There was no sound to signal their arrival and even with the wind they could not have come through the door without making any noise, yet it is clear that they were not here when Laslow first arrived.

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Taken slightly off-guard by the sudden appearance of the robed figure, his heart began to race with adrenaline. "I have a habit of working on my own, but perhaps that might change tonight." I likely only have less than a minute left on the ice generation and manipulation... Though hopefully I won't need it. He puts on the friendliest smile he can muster, stepping more into view. "A trick, I have. Though I suppose you can call this curiosity a form of foolishness, regardless. Your associate said you may have an opportunity for me, and I wished to hear you out."

Conspiratus

"Eager, and resourceful. Good. I do indeed have an opportunity for you. From what I understand, you desire to use your power and I can present you with opportunities to do so as well as the protection required at times to get away with it. Our cause needs Evos who can be of use to us, both via their powers and their inherent traits, and your value is thus compounded in the fact that your power can help us to find them. Loyalty is most important, followed by caution and resourcefulness. As for powers, anything will do. Find them, assess their character if you can, and then bring them to me unharmed both physically and mentally. Aside from that, you are free to do as you please in the process so long as you remain discrete." The figure turns around to face towards the edge, looking out over the city as they continue to speak but keeping their senses tuned to Laslow's potential movements.
[Enhanced: x1 Minor, -1 EP (14/15)]
"You will be reimbursed for any expenses, and you will be provided with assistance when necessary. Of course, as part of your payment you will also have the opportunity to use your power on others within our ranks so long as no harm comes to any volunteers, as well as against those that would seek to do us harm. Of course, the latter forfeits their right to remaining safe from harm considering they intended harm upon us first. And should you find yourself in a bind due to your efforts on our behalf, we will make every effort to get you out of such situations unharmed. A fair arrangement, is it not?"

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

He makes no hostile moves, smiling at the prospect that he could pick and choose which and how many powers he can try to take, all the limitless possibilities that could be imaginable. Of course, he'd have to play nice and simply bring the 'ideal' prospects to this hooded figure, though if he could find the time and right powers, he could... contain the others to simply take what he wanted, when he wanted.   "That sounds like a fair arrangement, though the details of how I would contact you or any associates in those dire straits seem a bit fuzzy, unless I am to be monitored at any given time. Even if I had your name, I would likely never be able to summon help by calling it out." His grin widens and he surrounds his hands with a cold fog, his eyes beginning to glow from his partially silhouetted face as he mentally prepares himself for multiple conflicting auras from this being. "Though I suppose that shouldn't be expected from worthy candidates to need help often."

Conspiratus

Their aura appears similar to the man from before, but only two layers are present compared to the three that surrounded the other man. These also showed the signs of another power beyond the enhanced senses Laslow had already seen... they held a power similar yet different to his own, a power to give and to take.   "Yes, if you live up to expectations the need for assistance should be a rarity. What can be done alone should be done alone, ensures the least risk of exposure." They turn around to face Laslow once more, holding out a phone for him to take. "A burner pre-programmed with a number which you can use to contact us in case of an emergency or potential delivery but keep details to a minimum. You will be provided a new phone with a new contact number at the end of each week, which shall be delivered to you discretely. And you may call me Conspiratus, though do not speak it needlessly. There is a certain level of value in keeping one's name, even an alias, on a need-to-know basis."

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

Letting his special sight and the icy fog drop, satisfied with the results and confirming his suspicions about the layered auras; this man gave a normie powers. "Of course, I will endeavor to keep you anonymous, my mysterious associate." He accepts the phone and is slightly disappointed that the gloves would prevent him from trying out the enhanced sensory power for himself. At this moment he can feel his icy power start to fade, his smile slightly faltering, but nonetheless happy for the opportunity of future prospects. "I'll keep my eye out for potential candidates for your cause. Shall I have them meet the same way I have met you?"

Conspiratus

"Yes, if they are willing then you are to direct them here at a specified time and notify us of that time. Though if you deem an unwilling candidate worth the effort, then you are to bring them here by force. Notify us and we shall send a representative to retrieve them from here. I look forward to our mutual success in our endeavors, I'm sure this agreement is bound to be a boon to us both." As they speak the last sentence, they turn around again to face the edge once more.

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

He grins at the prospect of possibly hunting down and bringing in a target, he takes a slight bow with one arm outstretched to the side, the other behind his back. "I agree. This will be beneficial for both of us. Until we meet again."

Boogeyman

P̸̋̎Ű̶́Š̸͛H̶̿̀

Laslow Karivatz-Briggins

No. He will be a useful instrument to help us grow. Plus... it would be a shame to let that power go to waste... the ability to change normies into evos, to give them the chance to be better than their basic selves... Seeing the conversation is done for now, Laslow takes his leave, going back out the way he came in.
