Scientific research and development, were at one point the epicenter of society during the Lost Ages before the Schism. Such developments produced firearms as a way to fight back against oppressive Mages, shipwrights who crafted great vessels which once soared the air and sea, methods of communication which allowed the folk of the land to speak with each other from miles apart in an instant. But like practically every amenity of the Lost Ages, they were scattered and consumed by the Schism without prejudice. What sciences remained, despite being a meek shadow of their former-state do still possess a vital role in current affairs. Scholar's Guild researchers constantly attempt to re-create lost technologies, paying for any research specimens they can find. While gunpowder is now a limited resource with the loss of the recipe, advanced bolt or lever-action firearms which survived the Schism are a wildly sought after asset, especially when most alternatives are inaccurate, slow loading modern day muskets and crossbows at best. Coachbuilder's which put together beast-drawn carriages, locomotive engineers keeping the last working supply trains afloat, Alchemist's who assemble complex medicines (or alcoholic beverages). One could go on indefinitely attempting to list the array of scientific fields which, at least attempt, to produce useful inventions, mechanisms gizmos and gadgets purpose-built to meet Everwealth's needs. Do be cautious though, like many products here not all inventions are even remotely effective at what it's creator set out to accomplish.
Recently for instance, it was discovered that 'cocaine tinctures', an alchemical tonic which once generated millions of Capras a year in profits for its 'restorative healing properties' simply masked feelings of pain, all the while dissolving the very lining of it's consumer's mouths and rotting their teeth while not actually providing any medicinal benefits; Much to the dismay of thousands who intended to use it to cure their ailments. To bring up firearms again, their initial design was noble on paper, to grant those who did not possess magickal abilities a defense against those that did, a long ranged weapon that required little training, firing a deadly projectile faster than most spells can be cast; However, an unfortunate side-effect would see the casualties of war rise astronomically, whereas before a skilled spearman would see 3-4 men dead at a battle's end, a sparsely trained riflemen could dominate the battlefield easily killing a dozen or more. There are of course the charlatans too, taking advantage of folk's good natures and commonly lacking educational standards; To sell cheap to downright worthless 'inventions' with the aid of a little outlandish jargon just to skip town with your coin before you realize you've been deceived. Through-it-all, while you arguably must possess a healthy fear of science to ensure your survival, avoiding it entirely may also spell your downfall, no weapons to defend yourself and no creams to stave off infection, just be sure to watch out for bad actors.
