"The essence of creation itself, integral to our every experience, yet you would see it snuffed out... Use your 'License to Practice' to abscond with our traditions, take away the miraculous gifts we were bestowed, locking us away while you sniveling cowards quell that which you are too foolish to understand, that which could be used to help the people under your 'watchful eye' suffering and dying year after year! Damn you I say, damn your laws and damn your Coalition Dogs!" -Last words of Bhacc Stormcaller, rebel mage leader, hanged 184 CA.
Magick is believed to be, even after millennia of near-constant, sometimes obsessive research, a field of study most-likely still in it's infancy. The current dark age aside, having academies and libraries by the hundreds razed to the ground during the Schism, vile sorcerers who instead of sharing their knowledge use it to subjugate their helpless fellow-folk until the King's army guns them down sending their findings with them to the grave, societal paranoia, prejudice political leaders, extensive legal restrictions et cetera; Has not exactly nurtured a positive learning environment for magickal practice. What we do know, from what institutions the Schism left in-tact and our limited physical comprehension, is that magick is responsible for all that exists, and every facet existence encompasses. Before suns shined and time marched on, magick was alone in a realm beyond our known as The Arcane as a wild shapeless font of energy without purpose for eons; Until a cosmic event called "The Dawn" would allow it to flow into our material world, where this formless energy would bind to it like a magnet to metal as if naturally seeking out a physical anchor. This event would animate our at-the-time empty, lifeless plane of rock and utter darkness, filling it with elements, plant-life, folk, a wildly different creation with each material magick would touch. Eventually suffusing itself into every fabric of reality, because of magick disease, war, nature, time, Gods, practically everything would come to be.
Alas, what exactly the nature of magick is, how it came to reside within the Arcane, why it seeks out a physical host or why being at base level the same font of energy, magick would birth life in one spot and lakes of magma in another, are all still quite the mystery to even the most powerful Mages of the land, the Gods themselves have not these answers, at least if they are to be believed. Understood with relative certainty though, albeit with large gaps in that knowledge more-or-less open to interpretation thanks to the Schism, is that as said previously magick lies in everything, determines it's form, it's function and so on, as sort of neutral energy the physical world we inhabit expresses in different ways; Magick is why fire is hot and why ice is cold, why we may wade water but not stone, present in all things yet is felt only by trained few. These trained few who may sense magick energy, Wizards, Warlocks, Clerics, among other titles pertaining to the unique schools of magickal study one may encounter, may attune themselves to it, feel how magick flows through the world, and how to let magick flow through them in one way or another to mimic or manipulate such expressions to suit their needs, such as how to heal the sick, hasten ones speed, or how to bring down the destructive wrath of a bolt of lightning upon your enemies.
