Old Mae
Background and Role in Our Story
Old Mae was born in Qarton many years ago, just like most of her ancestors. Unlike most of her ancestors though, Old Mae sought a life of adventure. She didn't return to the village until 656VD, by which time she was much older. Settling down to the life she had come from, Old Mae melted into the background of Qarton, although she still ensured things were going well and that people were safe. She developed a great love and skill at baking, her rock cakes taking top prize in Qarton's baking competition for 14 years in a row now. When her daughter grew up and wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps, Mae was adamant that she shouldn't but alas she did. Mae's daughter Alana returned only briefly, bringing with her a small half-elf baby for Mae to care for. Without much time to explain, Alana vanished into the night and so Mae set about raising Willow as best she could, hoping that she would never run off into danger like her mother did.... and like she had. When the bonk squad arrived in Qarton and found it at the mercy of Brutus' mercenaries and a strange string of disappearing villages, Old Mae persuaded the squad to help the village out. Hinting that the Mayor would pay them handsomely to get rid of the mercenaries, who had been hired to help solve the issue of the disappearing villagers but had instead elected to extort and blackmail the village. Later on, Old Mae advised them that Vincerus' Castle sounded like the likely location to the north that the villagers were wandering to, if the goblins' report was to be believed. After saving the village and before following the lotus compass to Thrantium, the bonk squad went to visit Old Mae. There she revealed a surprising amount of knowledge of Driscoll and warned of the threat he posed to the world. She confided that she had once been an adventurer long ago and insisted that she bake them some rock cakes for the journey. As she baked, with Knor Ti's *cough* help *cough*, Terry and Larry Tinkle found a loose floorboard in her cottage, filled with letters written in an odd cypher. Old Mae was definitely more than she seemed. Returning to the room, Old Mae gave a silver medallion to Terry, engraved with a spear entwined with a silver chain. Promising that it would help them find her friends in Thrantium, Old Mae bid the squad good luck and farewell.Appearance
Old Mae is a sweet old lady, who sports a silver medallion identical to the one she gave to Terry. Using a walking stick to get around and shrunk slightly in her old age, her eyes are crinkled by years of smiling and she smells like freshly baked bread.Personality
Likes and Dislikes
Old Mae likes baking, pinching cheeks and slow walks through the meadows of home. She also likes to help those in need, though not too directly. Old Mae will assist the needy and push those who are able to do what is right, being too old now to do it herself. Old Mae dislikes cruelty and evil. Old Mae worries constantly about her daughter Alana and fears that Willow will leave one day, seeking the mother that she's never known.Personality quirks
Old Mae bakes and smiles incessantly. However, beneath her typical old lady demeanour she seems to have an extensive knowledge of things magical, dangerous and powerful. No one in the village knows much about her adventuring days, beyond that she had some, but they seem to have been eventful...
