Purpose / Function

Shadowflare Academy houses the most renown and accomplished wizard academy of Evernight. Despite its original purpose as the homebase for Faranach the Lich, it has been converted to school and research center for all things magical. The teachers and other staff of the Academy are the strongest and wisest wizards in Evernight, and students have to go true harsh tests to gain scholarship within the prestidigious academy.

Alterations

Shadowflare Keep served as the home to Faranach the Lich during his reign. After his demise the researchers and mages started to explore the building revealing its secrets little by little. After the upper parts of the Keep where cleared of liches dangerous and dark contraptions, the mages desided not to destroy the Keep for it was a marvelous sight, and could be used for many purposes.
For few years after the founding of city-state of Merian the Keep acted as the goverment buildign for the council, but very fast its vast rooms where recocnized to be better used in other purposes. After the Shadowflare Academy was established, the whole Keep was transfered to the school in order to use as they saw fit.

Architecture

Shadowflare Academy is a massive building built in the top of seaside cliff in the shores Sea of Shadows. The Keep itself is considered one of the largest buildings in the world even without considering the seemingly endless tunnels that run below it.
The outer walls are made of black steel and odsidian. The walls are sharp and menacing, and purple and green magical flames dance on the walls constantly. These flames are made apparently by some magic of the lich, and even though hundreds of accomplished and powerfull mages have tried to dispel these, none has been able to even diminish them.
The interior of the Academy is made of dark blue stone, with high and imposing halls able to fit thousands of people in every one of them. Most of the interior has been redecorated to fit the purposes of magical research and the teaching.
Below the Shadowflare Academy runs the Endless Maze, a underground world of its own filled with monsters and black magics that Faranach left behind after his demise. Ever after the death of Faranach the adventurers and warriors have send their expeditions to the Maze in order to destroy and discover all that lurks in the dark. This is the purpose what first drew people to area now known as Merian, and the efforts of these first adventurers are what paved way for the Code of Shadowflare Expeditions which later evolved into constitution of Merian.
At the moment the the officials of Shadowflare Academy have informed that twentynine levels of Endless Maze have been totally searched and secured, but still the path seems to lead deeper to the ground, and new adventuring parties are travelling the depths all the time in hopes of discovering the magic and treasures left unguarded by Faranach.

History

Shadowflare Keep was established by Faranach the Lich somewhere around the year 550 of 12th Millenia. After its creation the Lich worked tirelessly in expanding his home and filling it with deadly monsters and secrets.
After Faranach's death at the hands of Thomon Everwood in 762 of 12th Millenia the Keep was shortly left without occupants or masters. However this phase was not long, for only a month later the first expeditions where sent to investigate the building.
After the founding of city-state of Merian in 763 of 12th Millenia, the Keep was named as the govermental headquarters for newly established city-state. Its time as a office was shortlived however as the Shadowflare Keep was renamed as Shadowflare Academy only two years later as it began its life as the most renown magical school in the world.
