The Undercity

The Undercity is the official arena of Old Tal on the Lake, famed for it's wild monsters and unpredictable fights. It is home to the Black Hounds team (named for Ser Perilous Grimm, engaged to Viscountess Talloak), one of the newest additions to the Imperial Arena Association. While stand seating is available for coppers, private viewing booths are popular with the city's merchant class, and ostentatious entertainment areas complete with staff are sold to visiting nobility. On each level of the Titan's Sword, viewscreens exist to showcase fighters venturing into the dungeons, which are viewed remotely through spells.

Purpose / Function

The Undercity serves two primary functions. First and foremost, it serves as cheap entertainment for nearly everyone in Old Tal on the Lake, as well as attracting traveling bands of arena fighters hoping to make a name for themselves. Secondly, it is a very convenient way for Old Tal to deal with it's monster problem- by throwing people at it until it isn't a problem anymore, with the added bonus of said monster fodder paying for the privilege.

The Black Hounds

• Bloody Violet is the leader of the Black Hounds, a dhampir witch that specializes in gruesome magic
• Crusher is a green orc clad in plate armor who used the enchanted hammer Ironbane to, well, crush opponents
• Thundara is a Sylph archer said to be able to shoot two arrows in the time it takes others to fire one. She is the heel of the group, often threatening to betray them 
• Gryx is a Kobold rogue with a pair of daggers painted as black as his scales. The Undercity keeps a running tally of "ankles sliced"
• Sera Redmayne, a human knight of Lancaster said to be after a lost love somewhere in the city
• Jax of Mt. Cyll, halfling bard who enthralls audiences with his exotic dances and deadly hatchets
• Deathroll, a Vinura-Dekai brute who fights with a pair of sharpened shields and his lethal bite
• Fair Jenora, Langite maiden who is a master bombadier fiercely loyal to the Empire

Architecture

The Undercity is a massive marble structure in the old Oenkanen style- that is to say it is done in columns so close together so as to form ribbed walls. The primary fighting area is a circular arena with rows of seating for the masses. There are two smaller fighting rings for less popular attractions such as archery competitions and a maze that drops off into untamed dungeon.

History

With the inhabitants of the lowest level of Old Tal on the Lake abandoning it by 1394 EK, the marble city-under-the-city was overrun by monsters quickly. The Undercity as we know it now was a project taken on by the Talloak family almost immediately. A self-stocking arena with unpredictable monstrous opponents quickly proved to be a popular attraction, and thousands of visitors to the city each year pay to witness the spectacle.
