Imperium Article Three: The Guard Is Charged With Investigating All Reports Of Criminal Activity...

General Summary

  • For three days, the party works for the Guard as normal. After work each day, Barry performs at the Parched Partridge, Morubash does freelance labor, and Reynard does chores (and gets to know the neighbors a bit).
  • On day four, the team meets at HQ. The entire North Ward guard is engaged in this incredible bust operation, going after dozens of Shadowcat members, their allies, and shutting down criminal operations all over the Ward in hopes of using them to get more names, putting the Guard ever closer to the elusive Shadowcat leader, as well as their top people.
  • The party was sent after Alicel, an Elvish armorer in the nicest workman's neighborhood in the Ward. The Captain provided some overwatch outside (and a ride there on an enlarged Chompers).
  • Some work outside, and the Halflings went in while Morubash guarded the other door (location was of course the forge).
  • Reynard and Barry were held up by the counter clerk, a Tiefling by the name of Bex. In the forge, Alicel ran for a backroom after shouting that they needed to burn the evidence. Her two assistants, a pair of Orcs called the Brothers Lasagna, barred the doors to by their boss time. An epic battle ensued. Bex threw up a field of darkness, Barry performed his little ass off, and Reynard made excellent use of his club. Morubash took out the two Orcs relatively easily, and the ladies surrendered shortly after (as part of a ruse to allow the evidence time to really catch flames). A quick investigation fond a half-burned note with half an address, several deadly weapons, and way too much hidden money.
  • After the fight, a mysterious note from the Captain arrived by crossbow. Reynard deduced that it was a forgery, and he watched the prisoners while the other two went to investigate (they swiftly tried and failed to kick his ass).
  • Barry found evidence that the captain had been kidnapped. He summoned other guards who took control of the prisoners and the three heroes went to find their captain by following the tracks of his dog. They found him in an abandoned thrift shop, having been beaten near to death and with chunks missing. They found another magic biscuit, made Chompers real big, and our loyal half-devil police hound zoomed the gang straight to the Captain's own neighborhood, directly to a temple dedicated to Attinae (on the same street as a Guardian temple, mind you). It was there that the dark priestess Restored the captain to his original condition. Reynard's intuition (correctly) guessed that this evil priestess is in fact the Captain's wife.
  • Back to the precinct. The raids were a success. Too successful. The back up team had one guy missing a nose and Bex escaped though. Anyway, it was discovered that most of the names the Guard went after were in fact NOT Shadowcats.
  • The Lasagna brothers were interviewed separately. Johnny, as it turned out, was only in crime to protect his brother. Jimmy was more into it, but spilled some information in exchange for Johnny's safety.
  • Alicel wouldn't talk without assurances. Learning from the Brothers Lasagna that Bex is like an adopted daughter of Alicel, the gang used that information to coerce her into giving up every single member of her fighting ring. In exchange for Bex's pardon and safety, she told them who attacked the Captain (a Goblin by the name of Chuffy Toesmasher). In exchange for a private prison cell beneath the party's house, she promised to let them know what she knew about a mole in the Guard.
  • Meanwhile, Morubash noticed that some old folks outside were acting suspicious. When the gang approached them to ask a few questions, they disintegrated into skeletons. The old folks spying on them, illusions, and the undead were the spies.

Rewards Granted

  • 600 XP (1400/2000)
  • 400 GP each, and a Potion of Jump and Potion of Expeditious Retreat each, as well as a Tanglefoot Bag and 2 Thunderstones each!
  • 3 GP for going to work

Missions/Quests Completed

The Cat and the Bird: By successfully investigating, the team learned of Chuffy Toesmasher. They also found out that the man who told the Cats that shit was going to go down today (not the mole, but the guy who distributed the information), is an aging Half-Elf gentleman by the code name of Mr. Falcon. Falcon hangs out at the Sky High Club in the Lux district often, and is described as being an older man with salt and pepper hair and a truly impressive mustache, nearly unique for a Half-Elf. He carries himself like he comes from old money, and is known to be in his real non-criminal life some level of aristocrat.

Notes

The spare guardsmen were on loan from New Railek. It is built out of the shattered ruins of the old Acundi  capital, and today is home to the grand majority of Elvish immigrants to the city (those not born Langite at any rate). This district is covered in unique plantlife that Greenpriests have convinced to grow here, urban sprawls of gigantic mushrooms and hardy, beautiful weeds. A few massive trees sprout tiny forests, and exotic beasts are commonly located here. There is often violence committed between gangs of Elves who ally themselves exclusively with others of their own kind, an unfortunate side effect of Langite rulership of the Confederacy. Here Rivaen live in large numbers, and as long-established members of the Empire, are said to be treated with favoritism by city officials over new arrivals. A majority of guardsmen in this ward are Rivaen, and those that are not are sometimes targeted by others as traitors. Of course, most people here are just trying to live their own lives and be happy. New Railek is charged forever with cultivating mushrooms for the rest of the city to eat, and is home to many underground "rot farms". Garbage and sewage is often directed here, much to the intense hatred of it's residents.
