Hightower
Hightower is a collection of mountain towns that have over time become one city. It is best known for it's confusing maze of walls and of course the tower known as Haden's Fist that overlooks the whole thing.
Demographics
Hightower is primarily inhabited by Tegdylun humans, though in recent years a fair number of Skaldorans, Halflings, and Gnomes have taken up residence.
Government
Hightower has always been controlled by the House of Hightower. What Lord or Lady Hightower says is law, and that law is enforced by the city's guards, nicknamed "shields" for their gear and insignia.
Industry & Trade
The people of Hightower have always been miners and masons. The city trades it's metal and stone for luxuries like spices and fruits as well as lumber. Goatherding is a common profession, and a few breeds that produce silk-like wool are raised in Hightower for export, though they are expensive to maintain and not very popular.
Infrastructure
As a result of Hightower's origin as multiple small, walled towns, the city is full of ancient walls and streets that tend to confuse outsiders. Unlike many Imperial settlements, the layout of streets and pathways is somewhat random. The main roads are cobblestone but plenty of dirt or gravel pathways weave ponderously throughout the city. Several flat outcroppings of rocks host large windmills, and the Opal River cuts through the city in curving, confused paths, requiring many stone bridges and allowing for a few watermills. Towards the western gate of the city, a makeshift airfield has been constructed. Many cairns of steel cover entrances to ancient tunnels that Hightowers of old have deemed too dangerous to be left open. Only one of the old tunnels is open to be used- a sewage system and it's offshoots that also host a few underground farms.
