The Foltorian Betrayal

One of histories most unfortunate and devistating misunderstanding is the Foltorian Betrayal of the Purgers one summer night in 516PE, which resulted in the annihilation of the entire line of Foltorik.

Prelude

15 years earlier, the Descendants of Foltorik signed the peace treaty of the The Purge Covenant agreeing to pursecute any human practicing sorcerery outside of the lineage of the Descendants of Eith. Many conflicts ensured between individual families in an effort to cleanse their lines of 'rogues'. Tensions rose between the Descendant Houses as they suspected each other of malfeasence. They all feared that the Purgers, whom had been their sworn enemies for 500 years, would destroy them all if even one of them was found guilty of treason.   The Purgers had bigger problems, however. The Rise of the Storms had cut them off from their motherland, and their resources in Hel were dwindling due to disease and drought. With the intention to persuade the Descendants of their dedication to their new alliance, parties of Purgers were sent to carry out raids of rogue territories together with the Descendants.

Rising Suspicion

One such party was deployed to Kaerup to investigate a border town said to be ruled by a faction of rogue sorcerers. The Foltorians were duly informed and requested to send their own force of sorcerers and Guardians to meet them on location.   The Foltorian left early, hoping to impress the Purgers with their puctuality, but ended up arriving at the same time. The Purgers were earlier than expected. In addition to this, they found the town to be abandoned by a week or more, which seemed to be no surprise to their Purger counterparts. The captain of the Foltorian troupes became suspicious, fearing that his rival cousins had reported his previous acts of mercy, and that the Purgers had led him there under false pretences. When he was asked to keep his troupes inside the town while the Purgers scouted the surrounding land, he suspected that they planned to ambush them, and formed a counter-plan.

Deployment

The Purgers' left their heavy cavalry inside the town with the Foltorians to rest and care for their mounts. Their light cavalry and light infantry systematically scoured the surrounding woodland in eight squads, each commanded by a sargeant weilding an Assimilant weapon in case the rogue sorcerers lay in ambush.   In secret, the Foltorians sent a skirmishing troupe of Guardians ahead of the Purgers to remain concealed outside of their perimeter. Meanwhile, they fortified the town with their sorcerers and heavily armoured Guardians inside, expecting the Purgers to turn around and ambush them with assimilant weapons.   Once the Purgers' scouts were far enough away, and their fortifications were complete, the Foltorians slughtered the Purgers' unmounted cavalry to a man. Purger trumpets sounded the warning and their scouts returned. They were met by a wall of shields and sorcery. When the Purgers stepped out of the range of the sorcery, the Foltorian skirmishers rose out of hiding and hammered them back toward the fortified town.

Retreat

A single unit of Purgers succeeded in disengaging. They formed a square around their last standing sergeant and broke through the Foltorian skirmishers. Running blindly through the night, they managed to keep enough distance between themselves and the Foltorians to escape with four men, and reported the events to their superiors at Anvil.

Repercussions

In response to the Foltorians' betrayal, the Purgers of Anvil sent a large force to Kaerup with reinforcements from Rammarvijk arriving from the west. The House of Foltorik was besieged and the line of their descendants was destroyed. A low-born governor was appointed by the Purgers to take over the management of Rhyd. Because of this, Rhyd turned into a puppet state, serving the Descendants of Mytheran, rather than the interest of its inhabitants, for the next 300 years.
