Terenior with the Cats

A retired old guard. He hangs out at the ruins of an old blacksmith's forge in the Graver's Quarter of Hammar with all the stray cats.

Appearance

Terenior is an old man with salt and pepper beard. His hair is still mostly black but thin and balding on top. His hands are roped with thick veins and the little finger of his right hand is missing. A cracked old leather vest covers his naked torso. Cat hairs coat his stained peasant's breeches made of rough flax linen. He usually sits in a wobbling chair outside the burned down ruins of a blacksmith's forge. Around his sandaled feet stand bowls of food scraps and water for the stray cats who like to sleep in his lap.

History

As a merchant caravan guard, Terenior has travelled through most of the Union and seen many strange and wonderful things. In his early days he worked for a tea-trader, running up and down between Fidhern and Hammar. He defended the caravans several times from road-side bandits who soon came to fear him and his mace.   After just four years, his reputation earned him a better paying position with a merchant who moved Light Crystals, wine, and silk between Neti and Rammarvijk. This brought him right up to the The Palace Of Heaven on the same day that Lord Warian died and stayed in the city for long enough to witness the funeral.   Just days later Terenior was contracted to protect a haul of rice from Rammarvijk, passing through Yugatan Pass into Yekanar, and then to Kaerup. This led to his first encouters with fire demons who were attracted to the campfires at night, and receive the burns to prove it. None of that disuaded him from taking yet another dangerous contract, when he got to Kaerup, to escort a merchant to the mineral mines of Notandari. He stayed long enough to lose a finger to the frost-bite of a snow demon, and then another three years after that.   Such was his life for twenty years. In 197FU he returned to Hammar where he bought a forge together with a fellow guardsman. Terenior took a position within the Gatewatch while his partner worked as a blacksmith. The forge burned down in 210, killing his partner. After the fire Terenior retired. He never sold the forge and has ever since accepted all manner of strays to take shelter on his property.   How he found himself the leader of the Bone Lips, is not a story you will hear from him.

Occupation

To all outside appearances, Terenior is simply a tired old man who cares for the strays of Hammar's poorest quarter. The youths who gather inside the ruins of the forge do not bother him, but may occationally run an errand at his request.   If you happen to know that the burned out forge is the headquarters of the street gang known as the Bone Lips, then Terenior might appear as a look-out. No one would expect him to be running a successful smuggling operation.   The "errands" that he sends the youths on are usually to disguise the passing of secret messages, or the collection of information on a potential customer.

I was almost at the end of the article when I was still thinking: 'Huh? How does he run stuff behind the scenes?'. Then we got to the Bone Lips part and I have to say I did not see that one coming. Well done!
