Thorncaster

Written by Etoilebane

The plants sway back and forth gently under the simulated breeze of The Great Outback Recreation. Occasionally, the breeze picks up and the plant sways a bit too much. The lilac-coloured thorn on the end detaches, landing clumsily on the ground and continuing the plant's lifecycle.

The thorns are anti-septic in nature and average between 15 and 22 centimeters in length. They end in a point that varies in sharpness, and is believed to be an indicator of the plant's health, with sharper thorns belonging to healthier plants. Common uses for the thorns are; makeshift surgical needles, skewers for cooked food, sewing needles, rudimentary stitches, and stakes.
Frankly, I don't know where these things came from. I told the eggheads in bioengineering to surprise me, and boy did they.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Multiple flowering stems, with green broad leaves. After flowering, bulb develops that terminates in a single thorn. Roots are edible, but have high concentrations of Vitamin B6.

Biological Traits

Green stem, bulb and leaves; yellow flowers with a purple center; pale purple thorns; dark purple roots.
Thorns detach easily and are anti-septic in nature.

Genetics and Reproduction

Thorncasters are fertilized like normal flowers during their flowering stage. After losing their thorn, the bulb propigates new plants.

Growth Rate & Stages

From bulb; 3-6 weeks for mature plant. With low-light and and temperature dormancy can be induced, allowing transportation of live plants.

Ecology and Habitats

Grows predominately in The Great Outback Recreation, however with nutrients and UV light can easily be grown indoors.
Lifespan
Several months or longer; depending on care or dormancy
Conservation Status
Least Concern
Average Height
Plants typically grow between one and one-and-a-half meters tall, with most members averaging 120 centimeters.
