Being exposed to a Null Void for a great duration or being the target of Meta Immolation can temporarily dispel the soul. This has no major effect on the Sophont, but will usually leave them slightly despondent. Re-entering a region with Meta and interacting with another being with a Soul will quickly kickstart whatever process causes the Soul to regenerate, and they will be fine in no time.
This condition is known as Hollow Heart or Null-Sickness.
There is a theory (which has traction) that having a soul makes you more emotional, because you are always experiencing the echoes of your emotion as much as you are experiencing the emotion itself. This is a fairly certain property, but there are still aspects of it which go questioned. One way this is verified is by removing the souls of mental health patients to calm them down—which does seem to have a long term positive effect. The downside of this, of course, is that the person reports feeling hollow due to Null Sickness, and worries about mortal danger now that they have no soul to anchor them to the afterlife.
