Soul Gem

Soul gems are quartz crystals that are polished to a transparent glass-like finish to serve as a vessel for life energy.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Empty soul gems can be used to store soul energy but with the cost of a part of the amount of soul energy that is accessible to the practicing soul weaver. The soul weaver will regain the spent energy as soon as the filled soul gem is used.

If a creature is bound into a soul gem, only the life energy will remain within the soul gem. It is the task of the nature warden to watch over the natural balance as the soul-binding process reduces the amount of energy within the global pool. In addition to that, there are legal regulations to limit the amount of bound soul energy.

Filled soul gems can be used to revive living beings at a maximum of five hours after death, but some regulations forbid a revival after natural death to keep the natural circle of life intact. Soul weavers can reuse the used soul gems after a purification process.

Manufacturing process

Empty Soul Gem

1. Place the glass pane on a flat surface and add the coarsest grit of sanding powder with a drop of water.
2. Move the quartz crystal in a circular motion on the wet sanding powder until it has reached a uniform sanding degree.
3. Clean the workplace thoroughly and let the sanding powder dry for a future sanding process.
4. Repeat the first three steps until the finest grit is used.
5. Polish the sanded quartz crystal until it has reached a transparent glass-like finish.

Filled Soul Gem

1. Attach the polished empty soul gem with a leather strap to the arm near the hands. Keep at least one side of the gem open and accessible for the spell.
2. Perform the soul-binding spell on the chosen sacrificial soul.
3. The sacrificial soul will die, and its life energy is bound into the crystal. The crystal will feature a colored mist in its inner core, reflecting the bound soul's personality.

Recycled Soul Gem

1. Attach the used soul gem with a leather strap to the arm near the hands. Keep at least one side of the gem open and accessible for the spell.
2. Go to your place of choice for meditation.
3. Perform the soul vessel purification spell during meditation.

Empty soul gems are common, while filled soul gems are only available in limited quantities due to legal restrictions. They are commonly found in black market areas like the Shadow Lair but are then most likely created illegally.
