Runira Language in Etheriel | World Anvil

Runira (ʁʊniʁa)

This language was previously spoken but has quickly changed into a purely written language due to its great energetic power. The single-word runes can either be applied to the user itself, other individuals, or items to change, enhance or diminish their traits. On commodities, the runes are carved into the material, painted on, or if it is an embellished item like a sword, they are often applied as an inlay. On the user and other individuals, they are used as a tattoo with the help of a whisper brush. Alternatively, the runes can be applied with an amulet that one can wear around the neck.   Runes lose their effect after a specific timeframe and must be reapplied regularly if the limitation or enhancement is needed persistently.

History

Runira has been present for multiple centuries and has changed drastically over time. Originally it was a spoken language with an extensive vocabulary. Still, as time went by and the native speakers slowly but surely passed away, the spoken part of the language also passed away. Only a few words are known and used today not to communicate with each other but to use as a tool in written form. Although it is a purely written language, by now, the words are taught verbally as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of misusage.

Writing System

The runic alphabet contains mostly syllables formed from simple stroke combinations, which can be combined into complex single-word runes.

Geographical Distribution

This language is commonly used to change, enhance or diminish traits of the user, other individuals, or items worldwide. It is handed down orally as the written words are mighty and can lead to unwanted effects if they aren't applied correctly.
