Tenets of Faith

Clerics of Tiamat prayed for their spells at dusk, in hopes she will return the sun the following morning, as part of a ritual known as Tithing. The Tithing required a small tithe, typically several gold coins or a small gem, which were hidden in the cleric's cupped hands while praying, then buried.

Tiamat's clergy also performed various other daily ceremonies in homage to their mistress. The Rite of Respect was a complicated ritual of abasement and appeasement was performed while approaching any chromatic dragon. This ceremony didn't provide any special protection from the dragon's fury, but failure to perform it was a death sentence.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

To Tiamat, deities of all creeds and from every pantheon are inherently tyrannical, and therefore her rivals. Since her division with Apsu, she's set become convinced that the younger gods are at fault for ruining her idyllic life before creation took hold. As such, she will not stop until she's put all of those usurpers into their place: grovelling at her claws.

Personal history

In the ages before creation, Tiamat existed as the primordial salt sea water, alongside Apsu who once lived as the primordial fresh ground water. They could mingle and flow into each other without losing their substance. They existed like this for untold eons. Their mingling and flowing through the Maelstrom gave rise to the inner planes, and with time the outer planes. The planes would float in their waters like islands and icebergs. Immortal beings would arise to represent the new concepts of reality: ethics, morality, the elements

They had created several children of their own essence, which were serpentine and winged and would give rise to the first true dragons. Two of her children, Lahmu and Lahamu, were different from their siblings. Lahmu was small and hairy and resembled a human man. His sister Lahamu was a great draconic serpent, but deeply desired to be like her brother so she took on a small form akin to his save that she was less hairy. The two deities spawned the first true Anunnaki deities, Anu and Ki, who were of a kind similar to their parents.

It was in these later days of creation when the Anunnaki were becoming more numerous that they created a great amount of noise in the quiet of existence. Apsu had been asleep for eons following his battle with their child Dahak, and became angered at this noise. Enki foresaw Apsu's oncoming wrath and had Apsu imprisoned before killing him. Apsu and Tiamat's second son, Kingu, learned of this betrayal and fled to inform his mother. Tiamat was enraged.

In preparation for her impending battled with the Anunnaki, Tiamat gave her Tablet of Destinies to Kingu, who fashioned them into a breastplate. Tiamat then created several new children to compose her host: Bashmu the Venomous, Ushumgallu the Great Dragon, Mushmaḫḫū the Exalted, Mušḫuššu the Furious, Ugallu the Storm Demon, Uridimmu the Mad Lion, the Girtablullû/ Scorpion Men, Umū Dabrūtu the Violent Storm, Kulullû the Fish-Man and Kusarikku the Bull-Man. Her younger son, Lahmu, also joined the host.

Tiamat took the for of a great sea serpent, and she possessed great and terrible power. The terrified deities were rescued by Anu, who secured their promise to revere him as "king of the gods". He fought Tiamat with the arrows of the winds, a net, a club, and an invincible spear. Anu would be unable to finish the battle, as was his son Enlil. It fell to Marduk to take up Anu's spear and club. He slew Tiamat after a great battle, shattering her body and using her power to create the form of the Material plane. Kingu was captured by the other Deities and Marduk took the tablet of Destinies from him, installing himself as the head of the Anunnaki pantheon.

Her spirit loosed from her primordial form, Tiamat was disbursed into the forming multiverse. She crafted a new more frightful form, of a dragon with 5 heads in honor of her serpentine children. Around her new form she created a realm for herself, deep within the Abyss during the elder days before true Demons arose. This she did to ensure the Anunnaki would not be so keen to hunt her again until she was strong enough to destroy them.
