Personal history

Laena grew up the oldest of two sisters, the daughter of a roboticist and a neurosurgeon both employed by Grantech. Her parents instilled in her a value for both science and morality, and Laena latched onto both with a fierce will that led her to be argumentative about most topics falling under those umbrellas.   Though Laena was interested in most science--especially having to do with biology and anatomy--she came to find that her passion lay in biomechanical engineering, a sort of hybrid of her parents' work. She spent the latter half of her high school years doing any research she could into the topic, amassing quite the knowledge base in her spare time, and she volunteered at Grantech with both her parents to gain more hands-on experience. This avid interest and skill caught Grantech's attention, and toward the end of her senior year of high school (year 2422) she was placed in a top-security testing facility to see if her skills were up to par with Grantech's standards. Though Laena passed the test, she and her parents had both developed a healthy distrust of Grantech following its affiliation with politics, and especially following Alem Johnson's election as president; this, combined with Grantech's "unorthodox" testing methods, resulted in her turning down their employment offer.   The questionable testing Laena underwent with Grantech motivated her--and the other three test subjects with her: Adrian Montgomery, Isaiah Newman, and her own sister Marina Elderwood --to use their skills toward building a competitor for Grantech.   After getting her four-year degree in biomechanical engineering at Tark University, Laena helped Adrian spearhead their plan to build a competitor company: Elderwood-Montgomery Technologies. It took two years to gain the funding necessary for their first steps, a task made more difficult by interference from Grantech, but they were successful.   Though Laena, Adrian, Marina, and Isaiah were all huge parts of the company, it was mutually decided that Laena and Adrian should be the official heads of EM Tech, with Adrian as CEO since it was originally his idea. Laena and Adrian, who had always seen eye-to-eye on most issues surrounding Grantech and EM Tech, came into the public eye as a couple--though all "evidence" toward this claim was taken from work meetings outside of "official" EM Tech business--and, not wanting to make a big stink over it with the press and deciding that it would be more efficient to live together anyway, got married after a year or two of journalistic pestering despite having no romantic feelings toward one another. They remained content in their platonic marriage until their deaths.   Laena had no children, devoted to her work and the people around her rather than a conventional family.   She died in 2495, at the age of ninety-one.

Education

Laena was public-schooled K-12 and participated in both karate and piano lessons as extracurriculars. After graduating high school, she got a four-year degree in biomechanical engineering from Tark University. During the two-year interim between college and her work at EM Tech, Laena took a course in paramedics.

Employment

Laena's upper high school years were characterized by her interest in biomechanics and healthcare, including as many hours as she could spare volunteered with her mother at a Grantech robotics lab or with her father at their local hospital.   She worked two jobs while in college: a part-time position at a nearby pizza parlor and a volunteer position at Tark's local hospital.   After college, she worked as a bartender for two years while waiting for the funds to kickstart EM Tech. When funding was complete, she took on the title of Vice President of EM Tech, a position which she kept until her death.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Her first achievement, which wouldn't have been possible without her EM Tech team, was escaping Grantech's test her senior year. That escape kickstarted her entire career and shaped all of her goals moving forward, though obviously not in the way Grantech would have liked.   Afterward, getting EM Tech off the ground was a huge milestone, and also impossible without Adrian, Isaiah, and Marina. EM Tech's beginning led to a myriad of smaller accomplishments as the company grew and began to achieve the goals for which it had been created.
