The magical mat looks like a standard black and white checked doormat with the white outline of a cat face on the top left corner black spaces.
When this doormat is placed down, the owner/castor moves onto the mat, and then casts the ritual spell to turn the doormat into the Mat of Restful Balance.
Around the castor the mat doubles increases to 10 feet (3.0 metres) - increases in size as each person, of the castor's choosing (ua maximum of 9 people), step onto it. The mat remains stationary for the duration.
The spell fails if the castor is interrupted or moved off the mat.
If the area is not big enough to fully encapsulate all creatures in its area, the mat will not increase any larger than the space available.
If the caster leaves the mat for any reason, the mat will return to original size and become a standard doormat. It must be collected by the castor within one hour, or will vanish.
No person selected by the castor can return to the mat if they leave. They may reach outside the mat to collect an item, or touch something. However, if they do so, they can be pulled off the mat and will be unable to return, without the aid of another person securely on the mat.
The area of effect is a hemisphere.
Creatures and objects within the Mat's total size are unable to be attacked or touched. All other creatures and objects are barred from passing through it. Spells of level 3 or lower cannot be cast through it, and the effects of such spells cannot extend into it. It blocks Scrying.
The atmosphere inside the mat is comfortable and dry, regardless of the weather outside. The 'dome' magically kept a breathable atmosphere inside of it. However, it does not generated its own illumination.
Until the spell ends, those on the mat is white opaque (like a fog cloud) from the outside, however it is transparent from the inside.

Mechanics & Inner Workings
There is nothing stopping a group of enemies, or curious creatures, from surrounding this magical mat and making a lot of noise. Which prevents the adventures from potentially taking a full long or short rest. After that it becomes a waiting game - assuming the enemy, or creatures, do not just bury the hut with dirt and rocks, pee on the 'walls' of it, or otherwise make a nuisance of themselves.
It is vulnerable to the spells Dispel Magic and Disintegrate.
