Mungoo

A mushroom-like, parental people who have emerged from the Moonglow Jungle in order to learn about the new "visitors" that have come to their lands from across the sea.

Hailing from the Moonglow Jungle, the mushroom-like people known as the Mungoo have their own customs and beliefs that differentiate them from other cultures almost as much as their physical characteristics. In the center of Mungoo society, there are very few shelters, as they can just plant themselves in the ground around the Gravemind. Shelters exist mainly to accommodate Saurin visitors, but are not frequently used by the Mungoo themselves. They do not need to eat or sleep in the traditional sense, and simply mimic other mortals when around them to make themselves feel part of communities. When more Mungoo are needed, some of the older Mungoo can create spores and those spores grow into more Mungoo. When they speak with each other, Mungoo are empathic and can sense each others intentions and emotions. Other races that speak the Mungoo language miss out on some of the wave of emotions, but can still communicate through the non-verbal gestures and squeaky tones.

The Mungoo don’t really react much to physical threats to their territory. Their pseudo empathic, yet detached way of looking at the world makes them slow to anger and slow to conflict. They tend to look over the big picture, and handle mystical threats to their kingdom. They allow the Saurin to handle physical threats, and live in a natural symbiosis with the Saurin. Conflict within the Mungoo is nearly non-existent. Any disagreement that cannot be resolved between two individuals is brought to the Gravemind, and decided on based on the collective knowledge of all their kind’s history.

Most of their customs revolve around the preservation of memory, and the reverence around an entity they call the “Great One”. Upon first questioning a Mungoo about the nature of this “Great One”, most Mungoo would simply state that she is the life-bringer, and be satisfied at the answer they have given you, as if the conversation was over. The more detailed answer, is that the Mungoo believe that this Great One is responsible for all life, everywhere. From a single blade of grass to the grandest war beasts, the Great One gave of herself to grant the miracle of life.

According to the Mungoo, it is through the Great One that the Mungoo were given the ability to store their knowledge in the Grave Minds, so that it could be used to avoid catastrophes in the future. With this wealth of knowledge, the Mungoo have discerned subtle harmonies between living things, and have taken on a guardianship of their natural surroundings, and their closest allies, the Saurin, whom they seem to view as pupils. They attribute all these things to the gifts of the Great One, and believe it is her will that the Mungoo continue on this path of natural stewardship.

The Great One, and the Faith of the Mungoo - The Life-Bringer, Mother of All

“We are blessed by she who is wisest, and most kind. With her gifts we are guided by the memories of our ancestors, so that each new generation is free to explore and seek out new wonders, and through her example, we give of ourselves to teach those who who are in most need of our wisdom.” -Pa-co, wandering Mungoo Shaman

Attributes of the Mungoo Faith

– The respect for natural life, and the belief in reincarnation of one’s life force. The Mungoo believe that physical death is a force that exists as part of the natural world, much like the wind, and prepare for it without fear.   – The respect for the wisdom of one’s ancestors. The belief that knowledge is sacred, and to be used to protect those under your care.   – Ceremonies to honor the Great One most often take the form of teaching someone a lesson in something they do not know. For most Mungoo this involves meditation at the Grave Mind, but when non-Mungoo have been included (such as the Saurin), the Mungoo vocally teach their pupil in a soft, almost parental fashion. Beyond that, Mungo are often known to build small shrines out of fallen flora and other detritus to honor the Great One.
