Flight of Pelaris Military Formation in Erisdaire | World Anvil

Flight of Pelaris

So it was He raised up those who had fallen in His name, those who had given their lives to defend those who could not defend themselves. At Eternity's Gate they stand watch for those who would pass through unbidden. Beyond the Edge of the World, they fight that which would destroy us all. For them, it is a price they gladly pay, and with of His love they are given that chance.
— Excerpt from 'The Twin Dragons'
As much as people have legends and myths about dragons, they have their own to pass down from one generation to another. Some of these are known to dragonkin, who have shared it to others as a sign of how dragons are not ravening or feral beasts. There is a culture more ancient than the elves, and their legends might very well be real events which shaped the world taken for granted in the current era. And, naturally, dragons have their own deities to pray to.

Among these is the being known to others as Pelaris, the Dragonfather, or the Shining Guardian. The metallic dragons of Erisdaire offer Him a quiet reverence, respect owed for having been willing to stand in defense of those dwelling on Erisdaire in the age of dragons. According to legend, those who stood at His side were allowed to serve there eternally as the Flight of Pelaris. They stand guard in His realm, both over those permitted to reside there in the afterlife, and from those who would seek the glory of assaulting a God.

Logistics

Recruitment

In order to become a member of the Flight, there are a great number of criteria which must be met. First, an individual must be a devout and distinguished follower of the Dragonfather. This is most common in dragons or dragonkin, but it is still theoretically possible to be eligible otherwise. Secondly, the individual being considered must have lived up to the code of selflessness which Pelaris advocates/. Dying as a martyr is not necessary, despite the implications of doing so, as how one lived is considered far more important than how one died. Lastly, more than one member of the Flight must give their nomination (and support) for such an act. This is perhaps the most difficult criteria, as requesting it directly or seeking to catch the attention of the Flight is usually a sign one is "not yet ready" for the honor. Naturally, Pelaris has the final say on the matter, and many have met these criteria only to be rejected... not that they are ever told it was considered. Above all else, Pelaris is not known to be so callous when giving praise.
