Durrsk
"I shall save you some time with your questions. What is the weather like here? Cold. How hard is it to live here? Like iron. This is why we are the Cold-Iron Spears. Never give the land an inch if you do not need to, or it will take your life."Known for the cold climate and rugged terrain, the northern peninsula of Durrsk is one of the few independent powers on Erisdaire between the Myrisian Magocracy and Rhyliss Empire. Much of this is owed to its location and natural barriers to military invasion, the dangerous weather, and the attitude of the people living here. There are ample resources to sustain themselves, though the difficulties of climate and native fauna leave only the most stubborn and capable to survive. Few outside authorities consider extending their reach into the cold north, and are content merely to exercise their influence at the borders.
There are two natural features which are often associated with Durrsk, and one of which is on the borders. Aurora Bay is the southernmost area associated with Durrsk, though they do not lay claim to it. Durrsk does, however, control Aurora's Gate which is a point of access from the bay to the northern ocean. Smaller rivers leave the bay, but these are often treacherous to deal with and prone to having bandits laying in wait. The other natural feature is the Kyrkan Mountains, which are an offshoot from Gilvonnaie's mountainous region and prevent easy access along the "neck" of the peninsula. These mountains have significant amounts of iron within them, and Durrsk has several mining settlements devoted to the task of acquiring and processing the metal. Residents of Durrsk rarely travel outside of the loose borders except on business, and thus the land has earned a reputation for growing hard people. Most will focus on a task completely, finding it less desirable to "waste time" when something needs to get done. This has also given rise to the reputation of "humorless" Durrsians, which is simply a lack of understanding. There is a time for work, and a time to relax, and relaxing can wait until after work is done. Additionally, they tend to view weather outside the north as "unseasonably warm" and tend to laugh at storms which fall short of causing property damage.
