Mergewater Archetecture
Purpose / Function
A typical house for urban living in the city of Mergewater, the capital of Lyrinthia
Alterations
Some people change the kind of wood to make their building stand out, or paint the beams, add more stone at the bottom, especially with businesses, as the change from the norm catches the eye, but the vast majority of the buildings are of similar style.
Architecture
The first third of the building that is visible above street level and the basements/foundations are made out of cobblestone. Going higher than that, next half of the building up is a Tudor timber framed exterior made from wood from the local forests. The remainder of your typical house is a terracotta tiled roof. However, older and poorer buildings in Merge water sometimes have thatch roofs. The buildings are usually at least two stories high in Mergewater, the buildings being tightly packed together, causing architects to design buildings to be taller, rather than taking up a wider surface area. It is not uncommon to see 4 or 5 story buildings in the more densely populated areas of the city as more people try to live in the same amount of space.
History
When Mergewater was originally starting to grow as a city, all of its buildings were made mostly out of stone, but after the union and the city flourished, more and more people flooded the city more and more land was taken up and buildings had to grow taller to compensate for the lack of real-estate on the ground. Building up with cobble stone proved more challenging in both an architectural sense and an economic sense, so gradually more and more lumber was used in the buildings, keeping a solid stone foundation, but having a more wooden upper half, this was a fine middle-ground and has given Mergewater the appearance it has today.
