Imperial Legion

"The Demenian Legion is proof the gods of war love the Empire the most." - Teritanus Whitestaff, Lord of Skyhold, Magi Republic

The Legion is a professionally raised, trained, and maintained army at the direct command of the Emperor. It is the largest fighting force on the continent and is predominantly split into three theaters: Northern (covering invasions and skirmishes in the Northern Kingdoms), Western (protecting the border with the Magi Republic), and Southern (managing the border with Lower Lete).   Service in some form of military is mandatory for all men over the age of fifteen in the Empire. This condition can be met by either joining up with a prefecture lord's private force or joining an imperial force. Legionnaires are generally better equipped, better paid, and afforded more upward mobility, it is also the only guaranteed way to earn citizenship, which confers special privileges, such as the ability to send children to publicly funded schools to receive basic educations (reading, writing, basic math), and a small stipend every month. These have all combined to make the Legion one of those most popular choices for military service among young men, and that is by design. It's a poorly kept secret that the Emperor eventually wants to entirely phase out prefecture level armies in favor of Legion style soldiers entirely under the control of the empire.

Structure

The ranks of the Legion are as follow:
  1. Master Legate: appointed directly by the Emperor to carry out his orders.
  2. Legates: appointed by the Master Legate to manage overarching duties of logistics or strategy.
  3. Lords Marshall: commanders of individual cohorts (generally 10 centuries of 100 men each, or 5 centuries of mounted soldiers).
  4. Masters-At-Arms: commander of individual centuries (generally 4 units of 25 men each).
  5. Masters-Of-Horse: command centuries of mounted soldiers (generally composed of 2 units of 40 each).
  6. Pilum: commander of an individual unit.
  7. Horseman: an individual mounted unit; not to be mistaken for a Knight, a title bestowed upon a person by a lord.
  8. Lords Arcane: commander of a century of battlemages (generally no more than 25 mages each; battlemage centuries are not organized into higher units)
There are other ranks and titles that go along with different duties in the Legion but the above are the most commonly used.

Assets

The Legion consists of ~165 cohorts for a total of 165,000 heavy infantry. ~100 cohorts of mounted infantry.   With a varied mixture of siege engineers, sappers, and battlemages.

History

The Legion was founded almost immediately after the end of the Fenixian War For Independence as a fast way to combat Magi Republican skirmishes and further invasions, as despite their surrender the Republic almost immediately began attacking border towns after the Letian withdrawal from the area. In 4634 the Emperor signed a decree formalizing the Legion's existence and putting it firmly under his control to defend the Empire at large. Individual prefectures are still required to maintain their own forces to protect and police their prefectures.
