Arcanum

The Arcanum is the successor of the long disappeared Old Arcanum. It acts as a gathering of some of Tera's most powerful wizards, ones who have an agenda to bring a system of governance to the wide world of casters on the planet. Ostensibly a secret organization only the most ill informed don't know of its existence. every known continent except for the Seven Islands and the Ice Floes have an archmagus or two who are members of the Arcanum.

Structure

Guild members are split into 5 formal ranks that denote ones involvement and station in the organization.

Arch-Magus

Requirements for advancement:

  • Grand Magus
  • 5th Circle caster
  • Served on 10 council
  • Donated at least 1,000 gold of research notes

Grand Magus

Each continent may have a maximum of 12 Grand Magus appointed by at least 2 Arch-Magus. Any Magus may challenge a Grand Magus other than a Serving Grand Magus for their position if they have the approval of 2 Arch-Magus.

Requirements for advancement:

  • Magus
  • 3rd Circle Mage
  • Donated at least 500 gold worth of research notes
  • Apprehended two rogue wizards to be brought before council

Guild dues:

  • 1000 gold or one magic item of similar or greater value per year
  • 10 gold per year per apprentice.

Magus

Magus and above are accountable for the actions of their novices and apprentices.

Requirements for advancement:

  • Establishment of a wizard tower
  • Approval of an Arch-Magus or 3 Grand Magus.
  • Donated at least 100 gold worth of research notes.
  • Swear to be governed by and accountable to the convention.

Guild dues:

  • 500 gold or 1 magic item of similar or greater value per year
  • 10 gold per year per apprentice.

Apprentice

This title must be applied for by a Magus in order for his novice to be entered as a full member of the Arcanum. A test is undertaken under the supervision of a Grand Magus that requires demonstrating the ability to cast first circle spells, or 10 gold worth of magical research notes from research conducted by the Novice.  

Novice

The status of Novice can be conferred by any Magus and is usually bestowed to those they intend to take on as apprentices. Though technically recognized as a member of the Arcanum this title grants no benefit, nor even the ability to enter Arcanum facilities unattended.  

Circle

A wizards magical ability is separate from their rank in the Arcanum and is measured by the circle of spells they can cast.

  • Third Circle Mage: 6th level spells
  • Second Circle Mage: 4th-5th level spells
  • First Circle Mage: 1st-3rd level spells

Culture

Magus are issued a wizards robe the has a number of interlocking circles equal to the circle of magic they can cast. The color denotes their rank in the college.

  • Grand Magus serving as members of the convention wears a gold pin in the shape of a triangle whose sides are formed by a quill, an eye, and a tome.
  • A wizard acting as a secretary wears a silver pin in the shape of a quill.
  • A wizard acting as an overseer wears a silver pin in the shape of an eye.
  • A wizard acting as a librarian wears a silver pin in the shape of a tome.

Rules of the Arcanum:

  • Do not use the unwilling for blood sacrifice or experimentation.
  • Do not unleash dangerous creatures or magics upon the world.
  • Do not create places of evil.
  • Do not destroy altars of power.
  • Do not share secrets of the Arcanum with the divine or their representatives.
  • Solve disputes among guild members before council.
  • Do not sabotage, steal from, or kill fellow members

Assets

General Benefits:

  • higher ranking members are given access to the teleportation sigils of all lower rank members.
  • Guild Libraries: Entry fee 1 silver per entry, 1 gold for the day, 5 copper per book borrowed. Books may be borrowed for 1 week. The guild library gives a bonus to investigation or history checks of a magical nature. +1 for apprentice, and increasing by +1 per rank above that due to access to restricted areas.
  • An apprentice may spend a free night in a guild dorm, a magus or above may spend a free night in a guild room.
  • Reduced rates on spell-casting services and a hub at which to purchase them 10% discount for magus and a further 10% per rank above that.
  • The Fever Dream: Elite tavern that can only be reached by teleportation circle. A useful place for gaining connections or asking favors. Only available to Grand Magus or above. Guest may be brought blindfolded.
  • A serving Grand Magus may appoint up to 10 secretaries for organization and record keeping, 10 overseers for the forming and governing of councils, and 5 librarians for the organization of guild libraries and tracking of member contributions. These positions will be paid by the convention.

Gifts of Advancement:

  • Arch-Magus: Given a scroll of Demi Plane
  • Grand Magus: Receive access to 6 levels worth of spells usually as one 6th level spell
  • Magus: Each Magus receives a scroll of teleportation circle and is expected to use that towards creating their own permanent circle in their tower either by learning the spell or selling the scroll.
  • Apprentice: it is customary for an apprentice to receive 3 levels worth of spells from his Magus

    • Grand Magus Mistress Lora Baker: Human woman in her 70’s but graceful for her age. She has a home in Alochrin that she uses infrequently. Wears a blue magus robe with 3 gold circles (6th level spells). She has her main tower deep in the woods as she prefers solitude.
    • Grand Magus Goram: Orc male in his 50's. Third Circle. Is an important player in the orcish coastal city of Gatumph.
    • Anastasia (Midnight Mistress): Female human. Fourth Circle. Leader of one of the two remaining great houses of Camrodel.
    • Grand Magus Igril Purplehammer: Dwarf male in his 300's. Third circle. Lives within Girhammer and keeps a sanctum under his dwarfhold a few days from Sanctuary.

  • Infrastructure

    The Arcanum establishes guild halls in major cities, each of which contains a library and member lodgings. They are also useful as hubs for making transactions among guild members or for members seeking spell casting services.

    The Convention:

    The Arcanum is governed by the convention which is made up of Serving Grand Magus.

    Structure of the Convention:

    One Grand Magus is elected from each continent to be part of the Convention for a 4 year term, deciding on the rules and their ratification for the entire order. Any Arch Magus may also participate.
    Judicial Body

    Councils:

    Any disputes of punishments are overseen by a council.

    Structure of Councils:

    • A council shall be formed of 6 members in good standing, of equal or greater rank to the wizard or wizards to be brought before council.
    • A member may dispute any to serve on a council trying them, if it can be plausibly proven that they might have some conflict of interest preventing them from serving impartially. A council may likewise bar any from serving among them for the same reason. 
    • After the members of a council have been ratified by both its own members and those coming before them its members may not change except by substitution due to death or dire sickness.
    • A council will convene to hear both sides separately then together and then be given a maximum of 1 month to make any investigations required before reconvening to make their decision.
    • Council may not appoint agents except where absolutely necessary in the carrying out of investigations.
    • Each member will be given a chance to state their findings and opinions after which the case will be decided by majority vote in the presence of those brought before council.
    • If approved by majority vote those brought before council can be kept confined during the period of investigation.
    Executive Body
    The overseers elected by the Serving Grand Magus' handle the organizing and supervision of the councils.
