The City of Wayhill

The city of Wayhill was once a small village of miners, however after years of mining the rich veins of the Mountain of Endless Fortune the village started to grow in size. During the expansion of the new kingdoms to the east, the city became a major trading hub as it was the last stop on the way to the new kingdoms. The city with its wealth from the mountain and massive amount of foot traffic through its streets exploded in size and economic power within the region. Soon after its rapid expansion the city went through an industrial revolution that led to the city being known for finely crafted goods and magical wonders. The city was often referred to as the Great Machine as its economy functions like a well oiled machine and its people acting like cogs, keeping the machine chugging onward. There is a saying in the city "if you can't find it; we'll make it".

Demographics

The majority of the population in Human, there are a few dwarfs, halflings and other races that have flocked to Wayhill to sell or craft their wares.

Government

The system of government is quite unique in Wayhill. The whole city is ran by Seven guilds The Diamond Pick The Blackened Anvil, Plated Coins, The Golden Trading Company, Rusty Daggers, The Silver Light and Bronze Dragons. These seven guilds form a council that is called the Iron Table. At this table all policy regarding the city is decided using a voting system.

Defences

The city itself sits on a large hill with a large mountain system on either side. The northern defenses are designed to use the natural terrain of the Gilded Pass and the mountains to its advantage. The southern defenses involve a three tier walled system, where each wall is larger than the next as you approach the city. These walls are staggered along the hill as to make artillery more effective. The last major defense is the floating Citadel of the Bronze Dragons disks that hovers above the city's towers. This was created to defend against the drakes and wyverns of Wyvern Peak.

Industry & Trade

The city is one of, if not the leading industrialists of the world. Their major exports are metals and gems along with various masterwork crafted items. However, they lack the farms to feed their population and import a lot of food.

Infrastructure

The city is quite complex, it has a state of the art sewer system that turns the toxic sludge byproducts from refining into non-harmfull waste that is then dumped into the Happy Haunting Woods. (HOW? Alchemy?) The city's drinking water is brought in by aqueducts, which allow the water to flow from the various mountains that surround the city. Magical lifts and transportation devices have been installed around the city to allow the transportation of raw and processed materials with ease. Not only does the Great Forge in the middle of the city refine the raw materials but the steam byproduct is used to heat the city during the cold months from bronze tubing that has been ran throughout the city.

Assets

The assets of this city are to many to list all. However, a few would include the massive wealth that is stored in the Golden Bank, the loans that it has given to other countries and individuals, its immense market place (which some say it is the biggest in the known world), the caches of food, magical components, weapons and armor.

Guilds and Factions

There are Seven Guilds of Wayhill. Each has their own function and are just a cog in the great machine know as Wayhill. The Diamond Pick represents the the Tunnel Builders unions. The Blackened Anvil is comprised of the forge workers and craftsmen of the city. Plated Coins is made up of two unions; the shopkeepers and the entertainers. The Golden Trading Company is the bank of the city and oversees any job involving it. Rusty Daggers are a group of criminal enterprises. The Silver Light is made up of the various Churches and faiths and Bronze Dragons is the mage guild.

History

When the humans first settled the area east of the Dragon's Nest Mountains, they had the intention of mining those mountains for their resources. Not wanting to be poor neighbors they met with the Dwarfs who resided deep in the mountains and asked for their blessing. The Dwarfs, seeing the relatively small number of humans and loathing to give up any of their mountain's resources came to an agreement with the human settlers.   The leader of the dwarf contingent spoke. "See that rather large mountain there, we happen to know that it is very rich in ore and minerals. We have not mined it's depths as it is far from our cities and would be a great endeavor for us to mine that far from home. You may mine that mountain, it should be enough to sustain you as it is large and very rich in resources." The humans at first were angry, insulted that the Dwarfs would only allow them to mine one mountain while they had dozens if not hundreds of mountains to mine. However one human, Avineus calmed them down and got them to accept the deal and be gracious and thankful for the "gift" from the Dwarfs. The human's began mining the mountain and as the Dwarfs had promised it was very rich in ore and minerals, enough to sustain them for many years, possibly even generations.

/*Avineus is the founder of the Bronze Dragons. He has created a ritual that slowly leeches metals and gems from the nearby mountains to the west that the Dwarves mine. The Dwarves have not yet noticed the leeching as they have retreated to their city in the center of the mountains for the past couple centuries. These riches that have been leeched from the mountains continuously supply the Mountain of Endless Fortune with riches to be mined.*/

Tourism

There is not much if any in the way of tourism in Wayhill, but the market here is a big draw. Merchants come here to trade, jewelers travel from far and wide to replenish gems, etc. Craftsmen come from other lands to learn new techniques, etc.

Architecture

Most of the buildings are made from carved stone with iron and wooden doors. The streets are paved with cobblestone and have stone drainage along them. Golden, sliver and bronze statues can be seen throughout the city. In the center of the city large towers who's structural base is made from admantine and mithral. (WHAT IS THIS}?   The craftmanship of the buildings is high as is everything in this city. People take great pride in the appearance of their dwellings, shops, etc.   Most structures feature function over form. The beauty is in the craftsmanship and efficiency of the work rather than how ornate things are. Everything has a function. More dwarf inspired than elf.

Geography

Wayhill is situated in "the Gilded Pass", a valley located on the eastern edge of the @Dragon's Nest Mountains. Mountains loom over the city to both the east and west but the city is nestled safely between them and takes advantage of them both for their natural resources and protection. Fresh water comes via aqueducts from the mountains to the city.
