Clan Ráille

"If there was one place I would not bring Levoith with me, it would be the territory owned by Clan Ráille. I'd prefer not to have to fight an entire clan of woodland nymphs because he decides to try using his poor excuse for flirtation." ~Church Paratir, Grand Archivist of the Authenian Archives.
Known for their impressive brute strength and skill with bows, the forest nymphs of Clan Ráille occupy the northeastern section of the Ceilic Region. Before the Venatorian invasion began, they were at war with Clan Laoc, but have since ceased hostilities.

Structure

Clan Ráille is ruled by Archdruid Enya Foraois. She is known for her cunning, her ruthless nature and her devotion to the Titan Iapetus. It is said that she singlehandedly destroyed a Clan Laoc outpost by starting a wildfire and causing an illusions to blanket the surrounding area. It is her duty to ensure that the clan remains faithful to the Titan Gods of Old, and to ensure the clan is safe and well fed.   Chief Advisor Fia Lennon is responsible for ensuring that Clan Ráille territory stays defended, and she takes her job rather seriously. It is her duty to organize the warriors of the clan and ensure that their patrol routes stay effective and unpredictable for enemies.

Culture

Clan Ráille values strength almost as much as the Fianna, and they are firm believers that they weak should bend to the strong. They believe that the victorious can do almost anything they wish to the defeated. The nymphs of Clan Ráille have gained a reputation as being merciless due to this belief.   The nymphs of Clan Ráille could be described as thrillseekers, who are rarely fazed by the prospect of danger. They do not see the possibility of death as a threat, but as a dare. They are hardly suicidal, but they do not go into battle with the same level of nervousness that someone from any other culture would.   As nymphs are an all female species, they require males from another humanoid species in order to reproduce. Clan Ráille has very little in terms of courtship behaviour. When one of these nymphs wants to find a partner, they will travel across the Ceilic Region, or even all of Eregost, and challenge male warriors to a duel. If the nymph becomes victorious, they make one of two choices: If their opponent was defeated easily, the nymph will typically kill their opponent. If their enemy fought bravely and with skill, the nymph will drag their wounded enemy back to the Ceilic Region, claiming them as a "husband". The treatment of these "husbands" varies from a humane imprisonment, to a genuine romantic relationship with a strange and unpleasant beginning. It all depends on the nymph that claimed them.

Fashion

In terms of attire, the nymphs of Clan Ráille prefer to manufacture their own from the materials they have gained from their hunts. Leather armour made from deer pelts are worn by those going on hunting trips or are on guard duty, often with a cloak made from wolf fur. Those who are not currently preforming dangerous tasks prefer to wear clothing made from goatskin or sheepskin. Many like to wear small headdresses made from the antlers of a stag. It is traditional for these nymphs to get a small, white tattoo of a pair of stag antlers on their back after their first successful hunt, after which they are deemed adults.

Humour

While true that every individual has their own comedic preferences, certain themes and styles of comedy are more popular than others. The nymphs of Clan Ráille love to satirize current events, especially if it involves nations and clans that they are not on good terms with. Some "husbands" of the nymphs of Clan Ráille work as actors, using scripts made up by some of the storytellers of the Clan to impersonate those who Clan Ráille hate in a comedic manner. Emperor Vigilo Angelius and Chieftain Hugon Edanis of Clan Laoc are the most common individuals to be mocked by these acts.

Food & Drink

The nymphs of Clan Ráille are a hardy people, and their taste in food and drink reflects that. They prefer savoury foods, such as venison, bear meat and salted breads. Generally fish is not a popular choice for meals, and as a result of this there are very few fishers within Clan Ráille. When it comes to alcohol, the stronger the drink, the better. Due to their complete immunity to poisons, it takes a lot to get forest nymph drunk. They are particularly fond of Fenian Whiskey, though they also buy large amounts of strong Authenian wine, particularly fine wine from Zestós.

Demography and Population

The vast majority of the population of Clan Ráille are forest nymphs. Typically warriors and hunters, though some work as blacksmiths, butchers, leatherworkers and merchants.   The kidnapped husbands claimed by these nymphs are often assigned less martial occupations, such as educating their children and training them in combat. Those that are trusted by their wives sometimes accompany them into battle, wearing the armour that they were wearing when defeated by their wife, often painted green as a symbol of their loyalty to Clan Ráille.

Military

The warriors of Clan Ráille are feared by their enemies, and with good reason. They are incredibly agile, quick, cannot be poisoned and can communicate and train dangerous animals with ease. They are very skilled with bows, spears and swords, and are happy to use brute strength to defeat their opponents.   The rangers of Clan Ráille rarely fight fair, unless searching for a partner. They are masters at stealth, and often traverse the Ceilic Region by running across the treetops thanks to their agility. Many have domesticated wolves and even black bears to help them in combat. They use druidic magic to weaken their opponents, leaving them open for a physical attack.   The Druids of Clan Ráille are terrifying in battle, capable of causing landslides, wildfires, and snowstorms. Some can even cause small earthquakes. They often take the form of large beasts, such as bears, or wolves, when magical attacks appear to be ineffective.

Foreign Relations

The nymphs of Clan Ráille have the easiest time trading with the Authenian Republic, due to their territory touching the Poseiatic Ocean. They enjoy a small yet stable trade relationship with the Republic, and occasionally let scholars into their territory to gather knowledge about their culture. The only condition is that these scholars do not try to free any husbands claimed by members of Clan Ráille.   Clan Ráille is yet to have much contact from the Venatorian Empire, but very few of the Venatorian scout groups that were sent into the territory of Clan Ráille have come back out alive.   Clan Ráille had been at war with Clan Laoc before the Venatorian invasion. Once the invasion began, Clan Ráille ceased all hostilities with Clan Laoc, seeing it as unsporting to attack Clan Laoc when they are already at war with a foreign nation.   As a general rule, whenever a Faerie from the Seelie Court ventures out of the Faewild and into the territory owned by Clan Ráille, they can expect to be killed on sight. Clan Ráille are disgusted by Seelie Faeries, both due to their manic tendencies, and for their complete disregard for mortal lives. They believe that Seelie Faeries do nothing but cause disturbances and attempt to harm the clan's "husbands" out of manic sadism.

Agriculture & Industry

Hunting the deer of the Ceilic Region is both a past time and an occupation of many of the nymphs of Clan Ráille. Venison is one of the most common foods eaten within the Clan, and most of their leather armour is made from deer hide. When they are not using deer remains for themselves, merchants within Clan Ráille sell them to other clans, and to the Authenian Republic.   There are caves within Clan Ráille territory that contain Saltpeter, a mineral needed in the production of gunpowder. It is sold to the Authenian Republic for a good price.   Cherry trees grow in the forest closest to Clan Ráille. While the nymphs of Clan Ráille do not care much for these fruit, they trade it to the Authenians by the barrel, as many in the Authenian Republic have developed a fondness for cherry wine.

Education

The majority of the education provided to the children of Clan Ráille come from either the captured "husbands" of the clan, and from the travelling anthropologists of the Authenian Republic that have come to study the clan. Geography, history, anatomy and ecology are all subjects known to each and every nymph of Clan Ráille, as they are essential to their way of life.

Large quantities of leather, dried venison and deer antlers are sold to the Authenian Republic. They also sell massive quantities of Saltpeter, a compound found within their caves that is essential to the creation of gunpowder, for generous sums of coin.
Major Imports
