Weather is hot and muggy, more like summer than the beginning of spring, and mildew crawls up the walls while the water is green with algae blooms.

- Mary's Crew asks Shâd for access to a forge, which she provides but informs them that she has a task for them at a later date.

- Naan crafts a signet suit of brigandine armor for Ana, impressing the Florentine armorers.
5th to 6th of Sovereign
- Mary in a trance to discover the name of an Outsider of the Nameless Court.
7th of Sovereign
- Mary asks Dragomir about wortcunning spells and reagents she needs for her upcoming Pythonic Liturgy.
8th of Sovereign
- Mary successfully performs the Pythonic Liturgy in an abandoned building in the Warrens.
- After making contact with Xox of the Nameless Court, she flees the building as it collapses.
9th of Sovereign
- Mary sleeps off the strenuous ritual.

- Mary learns the wortcunning spell Circle of Cast.

Instead of spring rains, cold heavy rain like those of autumn occur, causing courtyards and alleys to back up with scummy, polluted water.
6th to 12th of Martyr
- Naan crafts a signet morning star for Ana.
13th of Martyr
- The first heavy rains of autumn occur, causing courtyards and alleys to back up with scummy, polluted water and sometimes contaminating wells.
- Contact to take their boat out.
14th of Martyr
- Just past midnight, two men appear being pursued by the Custode Vigilante.
- The older man pushes the younger into the water and orders him to swim to their boat, but he screams in pain.
- Ana tries to pull him out of the water but his hand comes loose as his body dissolves.
- She dives in after him but sees an insect emerging from his mouth in its death throes and small bugs popping as they flee his clothes.
- She recognizes the bugs as the same ones on Grand Duke Alexandrescu.
- The older man, whom they later learn is called Bussa, and Ana engage the pursuers.
- Ana's vicious attacks rout their opponents.
- Naan fishes the young nobleman's clothes out of the water.
- Bussa identifies the young man as the nephow of the Shahanshah who was being held hostage.
- He also reveals that her younger brother Farheng is among the hostages.
- Bussa tells them to take the hand (and its signet ring) back to Shâd and tell her what happened.
- They report to Shâd and she bids them research these "striga".
- Mary spends her day at the university but it is Naan's help, as a native of Corbel, that helps him find what they need.
- Meanwhile, Ana steals poultry.
