Albrecht von Carstein
Albrecht von Carstein was the Margrave of the Barrowmark during the War of the Broken Crypt, the latest of a long line of von Carsteins to rule Carovin in the Emperor's stead. He was a humble, unassuming man, more interested in the collection of art and books than managing his demesne, though he was generally considered a kind ruler.
He left the day-to-day running of the land to his advisors, especially Dagobert, the bishop of Tyr , Alleria Nexander, the court mage, and Lord Wachter, High Inquisitor . Rarely did he leave the confines of Carovin to survey his realm. This proved to be his downfall, as his trusting nature made him easy prey for the machinations of Dagobert. When entire villages went missing and bands of marauding wights began ravaging the countryside, he was wholly unprepared to react swiftly. He left the investigation to Dagobert and Wachter, who secretly plotted his downfall.
Albrecht led the siege of Carovin to the best of his ability, but in the end, the city was overwhelmed. Reports say that he was tortured for an entire week and executed, his undead corpse chained to his throne in cruel mockery of his reign.
Fortunately, his daughter, Krake von Carstein, escaped. She would later rule as the Duchess of the Barrowmark for over 50 years.
