The Tyrian Inquisition

The Inquisition, also known as the Divine Order, or even the Divine Order of the Inquisition, is an organization feared throughout all lands where Tyr is worshiped.

In 607 HR, Emperor Holm VI was nearly assassinated by a group of Battlemages who sought to reform the Empire into a magocracy. His retribution was swift and furious, and after a bloody purge, the Order of Battlemages was destroyed. Their headquarters at Castle Vulkenstad were left derelict.

In the early days after the Battlemage revolt, a few squatters and religious zealots occupied the ruins. But this ragged camp eventually grew until it became an improvised church. "Holy relics" were conveniently discovered in the ruins, and the Bishop of Tyr gave a generous donation of blessed goats, sacred oils, and innumerable incense sticks. The band declared themselves the Divine Order of the Inquisition, and proclaimed that they would root out all heresy in the Empire. Furthermore, they would hunt down rogue wizards and burn them at the stake. Only those mages that pledged fealty to the Emperor would be suffered to live.

Though Holm VI was a stern man, he was not especially religious. Furthermore, there was little religious strife in the Empire at the time, and few heretics to purge. So the Inquisition remained obscure for over 50 years. But in the 660s, Emperor Cardalos II realized the usefulness of a group of armed zealots unbeholden to any law and loyal to his every command...   After a period of unprecedented power, the Inquisition was effectively disbanded in the War of the Broken Crypt, after it was discovered that many of the Inquisitors had been corrupted by Sanguine worship.
