polar shift

the polar shift is a slow progression towards shifting the north and south pole. When the poles shift it will be a problem for devices that use the geomagnetic north.
The shift itself is not considered dangerous, but during the shift the magnetic field is weak. The field interacts with the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun.

The magnetosphere is the region above the ionosphere that is defined by the extent of the Earth's magnetic field in space. It extends space, protecting the Earth from the charged particles of the solar wind and cosmic rays that would otherwise strip away the upper atmosphere, including the ozone layer that protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation.
