Cendliand

The kingdom of Cendliand is situated on the northwestern edge of the Epis continent. It is a middling-sized kingdom with both mountains and coastal regions. Its most defining feature, however, is the magic zone, a 200-kilometer diameter sphere of wild magic centering on Swordsholm Palace in Dragonsfell, Cendliand’s capital.

Structure

Cendliand is ruled by a king or queen chosen by the Kings Sword. When a king/queen dies, The Kings Sword returns to the same spot it was forged in what is now the principal courtyard of Swordsholm Palace. Every person in Cendliand with a connection to the wild magic is invited to try their hand at pulling it. Whoever pulls the sword in the new king/queen. A king or queen also has the strongest connection to the wild magic and can access their power outside of the magic zone with the aid of The Kings Sword. In modern times they are counted as a class-one mage.

Aiding the king/queen is the Swords Council, whose member called princes/princesses of the Sword, are also chosen by The Kings Sword. They have magic that is half the strength of the king/queen with slight variations and are class two mages. The Kings Sword calls them with a pulsing song. This piece of information is a state secret and is only known by the princeses/princesses themselves and their immediate families.

Most princes/princesses are found as adults and have had careers they may pursue part time keeping them grounded and connected to the population of Cendliand. The exception to this is the children of a king. Most are members of the Swords Council, but not all. One in a hundred is not chosen by The Kings Sword therefore, is not a part of the Swords Council. The royal princeses/princesses are trained from childhood to lead the council in the king’s absence.

To support the king and his/her council is a two-house parliament called the Keys Council, elected by the people, and the Scales Council, appointed based on skill and distinction from their chosen field.

Keys elections are held every five years with half the seats up for re-election at anyone time. There are 568 seats on the Keys Council. The leader of the party with the most seats is the speaker for the Keys.

New Scales are appointed once a year at New Year from a list of approved candidates, dependent on their field of expertise and which Scales members have either died or retired in the previous year. If a post becomes vacant in the first three months of the year, a late appointment may be made. There are 312 members of the Scales Council.

The three councils are organised into committees headed by a prince/princess to write laws and policies which are then taken back to be publicly debated by the Keys and the Scales and voted on by both houses. A law is approved when it had the support of both houses. The newly voted-on law is presented to the Swords to be approved by them and the king/queen.
