Magic of Eoth

Magic means many things to many people. It is a fact that most seats of power, including Gran Kesh and Estemont, have an official position called the "court mage." The Estemont court mage, Thackwidget is known in particular for his auguries and visions. The court mages are generally highly respected, a few doubt their powers.

"Hedge wizards" (as the are sometimes disparagingly called) are often itinerant, roaming the land selling their wares and offering their minor magics for sale. It's best to be wary with these individuals, for while they are often legitimate merchants, their snake oils may or may not be all they claim.

Many people of the land have "gifts" which allow them to perform tricks. A woman who could start a fire without flint. A woodsman who could pass through dense thorny thickets, unscathed. A scald who seems to be able to magically illuminate the room during a performance. A washerwoman who is able to remove stains from clothing without water. A gnome, able to repair jewelry without tools. Do these people have the essence of magic needed to become a magician? Perhaps, perhaps not. For with the lore lost, there is no one to teach the ancient ways. Rumors of secret organisations that perpetuate the art of magic are generally written off as wives tales; there are an equal number of stories in which such groups are mysteriously eliminated. As a consequence, the idea of having or harnessing magic, or possessing magical items, is considered a curse.

The divine powers of the religious leadership, including clerics and druids, while magic of a sort, have managed to sustain the wisdom of their kind, though few choose the way of a deity. The few scrolls and potions they create are used for the benefit of the populace.

Magical items seem virtually non-existent, except in stories of old.
