Imperial Calendar

The Imperial Calendar is the predominant timekeeping system used by people in Eorin, created by the Tarleshe Empire in the 822nd year of the Third Era. It was adapted from the dual-lunar calendar of the cerdaien and similarly uses the movements of the two moons to guide the passage of weeks and months, but includes a number of leap days and a single leap month to keep it in line with the solar year and the seasons.   The length of the week is set by the dark moon Pren, and measures nine days between each new moon. The months follow the pale moon Sela, alternating between thirty-four and thirty-five days long. There are sixteen months in the year, which starts around the spring equinox, and every ten years there is a leap month.

Ascension and Descension

Positioned at the start and mid-point of the year, these two holy days occur at the dawn and dusk of the year. While they were originally just a functional addition to the calendar, keeping the start of the months in time with the new moon of Sela, they quickly took on religious and cultural significance within Imperial society due to the shared 'dawn and dusk' symbology within the Kylorun religion.

Ascension

Ascension is the first day of Imperial Calendar, positioned around the time of the spring equinox. It sits between the months of Lathandele and Oghmale and marks the movement of the annual cycle from 'night' into 'day'. Every five years an additional intercalary (outside of the month and week structures) leap day follows it, which keeps the start of the weeks in time with the new moon of Pren.

Descension

Descension signals the midpoint of the year, positioned around the time of the autumn equinox. It sits between the months of Malale and Chauntali and marks the marks the movement of the annual cycle from 'day' into 'night'.

Months of the Year

The official names for the months come from the Imperial calendar's cerdaienel routes, each on named after one of the primary gods of the Faith of the Many. However many of the months also have unofficial names, used by the common folk and in day to day conversations, which tend to come from interpretations of the god's names or their domains in the Faith, or from the months position in the year.

      Show Spoiler

I have tried to allocate each god a month that correlates to their domain. For example:

  • Lathander, the god of birth and renewal, is given the first month of spring while the month before, the last month of winter, is given to Ilmater, the god of endurance.
  • Most wars are started and fought during the end of spring and the start of summer. In cerdaienel culture this has led to the forbiddance of violence during Eldale, making it a month of complete peace, before it is then followed by Valkali and Tormale, the two months when most fighting and battles occur.
  • Chauntali is the month of the harvest in the eastern and southern parts of Eorin, during which all the crops must be harvested before Talole, when the autumn storms come from the Cerulean Sea and any crops left in the fields are flattened and destroyed by great winds and heavy rains.
  • The summer solstice occurs in Llirali, the month of joy, while the winter solstice occurs in Sharali, the month of darkness and loss.
I am currently using the world as the setting for a D&D campaign and therefore have used the gods from various D&D settings for simplicity and to make it easier for the players. However, due to the naming convention for the months I have set up it will be very easy for me to create my own gods and allocate them a month.

*These days are known as the celestial days. They are named after the three main celestial bodies, that are considered to be deities, and as such are considered holy days. The remaining six days are given to represent the other six celestial bodies, which are much smaller in the sky and whose presence is not as constant, and are known as the saint days. Each region belonging to the Kylorun Church give different names to the six saint days according to which saints are important in that area.
