Summary

In the many pantheons of gods, both good and evil, few are more well known and well feared than Tiamat. A dragon goddess with 5 heads and an inability to truly die, her name is spoken only by those mad enough to incur the wrath of dragons.   Despite her notoriety, few are aware of the bastard child she hid away, the wyrmling she birthed that became so powerful he had to be banished to a separate plane of existence. Born from the conflux of her powers, the young godling was given the name Anaxion. As the young dragon entered adulthood, he gained the weapon of his ancestors, his breath. His was unique, even when compared to his mothers, a destructive force that carried power even he struggled to control. Unlike any dragon before him, Anaxion's breath combined the many elements he was born from together and unleashed them at once, a power he named the Maelstrom.    In mastering the Maelstrom, Anaxion's power rose enough that his mother saw it as a threat to her rule and her supremacy, and so she summoned enough strength to send him from her home plane to the Prime Material. So began a long list of stories that were long thought to be disconnected, but that historians have recently (within the last thousand years) begun connecting into a greater standard of stories involving this deity, the Anaxic Canon.

Historical Basis

Many stories throughout history involve mysterious and heroic figures that leave without a trace. Though most cultures have at least a handful of folkloric figures who fit this account, Gorian historians have been working with each other for more than a thousand years to piece together the identity of one such figure whose description often includes many similarities even across countries and oceans. A dragon with the eminence of a storm, and a wingbeat that can shake mountains. It glides the air with tall white protrusions that stick from its skull like lightning rods and attracts only the fiercest storms. The stranger heralds catastrophe, only appearing during or shortly before a tragedy. Despite its strange appearance, draconic form, and bad timing, it also has an appetite for evil-doers and the wicked, sometimes swallowing invading armies whole--though that may be some cultural embellishment.   This creature has been tracked across every country of Ec'algor and many historians believe that if civilization still existed elsewhere, they would find evidence of this being's presence there as well. It was not until the late 300's Y.E. that an altar in Kentricury was located during an expedition from Anthalus' Resort. Scholars amassed in Bunkertown for months and hired the finest mercenary guilds money could buy, venturing to that altar to uncover its secrets, finding stories left in carvings all throughout a half dozen or so buildings adjacent to the originally reported site. At the heart of the structures, a statue was found with many of the same details from legend carved into its edifice and a single name left at the foot of the 14-foot tall rock sculpture: Anaxion Almighty.   Since this discovery, the use of the Legend Lore spell has uncovered a great many secrets lost to time. Old stories traded by dying fires and tales of a sometimes valiant, sometimes villainous creature that flew on wings of darkest storm and whose scales glittered like light disappearing into a black hole. Similar uses of the spell were able to uncover several other sites of prayer and worship for Anaxion that dotted the rest of the continent, some even still standing. In an age where the world seems understood, the study of Anaxion routinely reveals how little is truly understood about Eniea, and how much is left to discover.

Spread

Though the name "Anaxion", and his many epithets like "Great Dark Deity", "The Living Drought", or "The Scaled Tyrant" may not be commonly known to those involved in religious study, it is often the case that people know Anaxion incidentally through one of the many stories that have been associated with his mythology.   Estimates place the spread of Anaxion's influence among the most well-known deific figures , making beings like Tyr, Shar, Silvanus, Lathander, Bane, Orcus, Primus, and Kelemvor his peers.

Variations & Mutation

One epithet of Anaxion casts him as a god of oaths, in this portfolio he is called Asorion and is responsible for striking agreements between the divine and material worlds, ensuring that the godly side of an obligation is upheld. Traces of this representation predate those of Anaxion, leading many to believe that Asorion was a lesser entity that was absorbed, or perhaps devoured, by Anaxion along with its portfolio.
