The Rosewreath Bloodline

The Rosewreath bloodline is a magically gifted genealogy, whose members can innately make us of and speak the Dissonance - a unique ability among mortals.

The Birthmark

Rosewreath is not a simple last name, but rather the adopted name of anyone who manifests their telltale birthmark - a wreath of lavender rose petals. This unique birthmark can only manifest at birth when at least one parent is also a Rosewreath, yet it is not guaranteed to.
Still, even those with Rosewreath ancestry who themselves are not so can birth a future Rosewreath. In that case, the birthmark will, contrary to its name, never appear at birth but rather manifest at some point between the child's second and tenth birthday.
This manifestation causes a large amount of Dissonance to course through the child's body, manifesting in a dangerous fever that can last for weeks. Healing magic and common curatives are almost useless in combating the fever. Only another Discordant - preferably a Rosewreath - can properly help the child.

The Magistery

While it is notoriously difficult for any but the best of mages to join the main corps of the Magistery, children born as Rosewreath can always freely join. In most parts of the world, this is voluntary, however, certain countries require Rosewreath children to be given up for adoption.
Officially, the reason for this is their natural affinity for the Dissonance. However, some people claim that there are ulterior motives, as the Magistery is extremely protective of them and will actively hunt down slavers who are believed to have enslaved a Rosewreath.

Role in Society

Despite their great potential, it is unheard of to see a Rosewreath warmage. Instead, most are pursuing alchemical ventures, creating the most wonderous items and potent potions. They also frequently act as court tutors, as their mastery of the Dissonance makes them great teachers for any manner of magic user.
Simply having a Rosewreath at court is extremely prestigious for any ruler, yet due to their close affiliation with the Magistery, many nobles fear their influence.
