The Dissonance

The Dissonance is the mythical language of unknown provenance that can be used to change reality and break the laws of physics. According to folklore, it is the language of deities, and the world itself was created through it. When used to create an effect, it is referred to as 'issuing a command'.

Applications

Any who can use this language - in whatever form, including thought and engraving - can cause reality-altering effects around them. This can range from destructive functions like explosions to restorative ones, like mending broken glass. In this form, the supernatural effects will vanish after taking their course. A repaired glass will stay in its form, and a started fire will continue burning, however, a reversal of gravity will subside again moments later.
To achieve long-lasting effects, the command either needs to be written down or imbued with enough power to continue echoing throughout the space it occupies. The former is predicated upon finding a material that is not simply destroyed when etched upon, which is generally only possible by reinforcing it. And even then, eyes illiterate to this dangerous language often melt upon beholding it.
To put more power into the incantation, a user has to be capable of generating it - usually requiring years of rigorous training. Furthermore, the likelihood and ramifications of accidents increase exponentially to the power put into the command.

Abstractions

It is exceedingly rare for anyone but the most dedicated - and maybe foolhardy - to directly study the dissonance. For this reason, Abstractions were developed, which are what is commonly referred to as 'Magic'. They still draw their power and reality-altering capabilities from the Dissonance, yet users never directly utter or interact with the language. Instead, it is invoked through a layer of abstraction, ranging from anything like a specific sequence of words to a dance.
This makes it considerably safer - if a word is mispronounced, or a dance step is placed incorrectly, the intended effect simply fails to manifest. If the same was attempted with raw Dissonance, there could be disastrous consequences.
However, invoking magic through abstraction is far less powerful and adaptable than pure Dissonance.
