Demons

Demons aren't a homogenous race like one might suspect, but rather an umbrella term for all creatures living in the Underworld aside from Devils. They range from feral beasts to fully sentient beings akin to humans.
The duller ones of them are often kept by Devils as guards, labour or even pets, yet there are various breeds that highly value their independence and are almost in a conflict with them. However, it is extremely hard for one of them to leave the Underworld without the New Republic's permission who guard the exits with extreme force, yet it is largely unknown why they keep such a tight grip on it.

Common Subraces

There are a number of common races that can occasionally be spotted on the surface, usually in the company of devils:

Swarm Bats

This curious breed of bat is often used by Devils to scout ahead, as they can cover vast distances and are surprisingly hard to detect at night. They get their name from the peculiar behaviour of always flying in large swarms that can even threaten cows and other large animals, as opposed to their surface dwelling brethren. They have also become a symbol of the underworld in the eyes of many temples, leading to even normal bats being reviled and considered evil.
Curiously, the Devils themself don't seem to like them very much and you can rarely see one around such a bat, yet they won't divulge why.

Hell Hounds

A common pet and guard among devilkind, these large yet surprisingly thin hounds with short fur are known for their extreme ferocity and speed when enraged, yet they can even be trained by humans, making them a prestigious token among the higher class.
Their proximity to surface dogs leads many to believe that they were actually taken to the underworld from there and especially bred to fulfil its inhabitants' desires. It also makes for an excellent hunting dog.

Goat Demons

These sentient creatures are almost only seen at infernal outposts and the Devil's weird steamers. Their intelligence and autonomy is strongly disputed among scholars as they always remain extremely stoic and only react to something if they conceive it as a threat - or if their infernal overlords command them to. Unlike the hounds and bats, the devils won't even talk about the possibility of selling one of them to a human noble.
These wicked things are larger than any man and have the stature of a grizzly bear standing up on its paws. Their head and lower body is that of a goat with long, shaggy hair and they sport a pair of imposing horns. While they usually don't wear any armour, their thick skin and long pike is enough for them to defend their masters against any would-be attackers if their sight alone isn't enough to make them give up already.

Imps

Imps are generally considered annoying, mischievous spirits with a surprising amount of free will and defiance. They can become invisible, fly and even use the correspondence to some small extent. However, they are only rarely used by the devils themselves: the manual labour is done by the Goat Demons and most of the scouting by the bats, yet one can still sometimes spot an imp accompanying a devil on their ominous travels.
They are small creatures, hardly able to pose a threat to a human as long as they don't wield a weapon, yet they can (very) occasionally have strokes of brilliance and be a real threat. Their small leathery wings are hardly enough to support themselves in the air, suggesting the constant use of magic instead.
