Ritlir river system

Large river which originates from the Daudrvell mountains, flows through the Meadow Vale and forms Torrindeep lake. There it splits in two, the western arm leading to the southren fenns and the eastern running straight down to the coast at Odiso.

Geography

Tributaries

As the major river on the southern half of the continent, the Rithlir has several tributaries which contribute to its massive size. They are listed here from north to south.

Northern Run

The northernmost tributary, which comes down from the high Annuremyn and flows southwest. On its banks stands the city of Irveln. A path follows this river to the high pass discovered in the Giant War, though it fell into disrepair after the second destruction of Caeldun. It is still navigable by foot, but has not been further restored or maintained despite the recent repopulation of Caeldun.

Wyndon

The longest of all the tributaries, this river winds through the valley of Brynn. It has two significant tributaries of its own; the Ollbeek and the Abfin. The Ollbeek runs from the hills to the north and curls around the hill of Brynn, connecting the city to the Ritlir. The Abfin flows through a more southern valley and forms the border with the County of Linntire. Where the Abfin joins the Wyndon there are bridges which connect two small islets to form the passage of Driebrug.

Calenmir

This river forms the eastern border of Western wood. The old elven name is still used to this day. It refers to the deep, still pools along the upper river with their clear, green colour. On the lower part of the river, the trees have long since been cleared on the northeastern side, but the lack of good crossing places and sheer wildness of the wood on the other side have prevented any human presence there.

Siannodel

This river runs through the Western woods. It does not connect to the main river but to the western arm - since the confluence is south of lake Torrindeep. There is a bridge across it just before it joins the West Ritlir.

Bifurcation

The Ritlir flows into the large Torrindeep lake near the capital city of Torindach. It flows out again as two rivers; the East and West Ritlir. The eastern arm is the larger of the two at this point.

East Ritlir

This arm comes down from the eastern side of the lake. It is deep and follows an almost straigth path, going south and a little east until it reaches the coast. Where it meets the Zephyr Gulf there stands the large port city of Odiso. The east Ritlir is deep and wide enough for smaller ocean ships to navigate it easily and sail upstream to Torindach. It forms the border between the Counties of Odiso and Oostkamp.

West Ritlir

Initially this arm of the Ritlir is quite a bit smaller than its eastern brother. It flows southwest along the borders of the mysterious Western wood until it is joined by the Siannodel. This addition suddenly makes it larger then the East Ritlir. It then continues through the coastal plain, gaining even more water from the marshes between it and Alnarel forest.   Some 40 miles from the sea, the West Ritlir loses cohesion and starts to split into numerous channels. Thus it forms the beginning of the massive delta of Belrithl, whose thousands of streams form a beautiful, vibrant ecosystem. At the coast this delta dominates a stretch of over 50 miles long before the coastal hills of Lurgam take over.
A very large channel called the Fennstream does not join the delta, curving West instead. At first numerous channels still branch from it and join the delta to the south, until the coastal hills block the path to the sea. The Fennstream continues to collect water from the marshes and the notorious Swamp of Sorrow to the north. This water gain enables it to maintain its original size despite the offshoots. The city of Feorfenn was built between the Fennstream channel and the coastal hills. The Fennstream continues west until a gap in the coastal hills allows it to turn south and find the ocean.   An oddity is the Isdif, the last arm which splits from the Fennstream. Instead of joining the delta it continues flowing southwest to the hills and goes subterranean there, carving an extensive cave system. It emerges again on the other side of the hills and flows into the ocean some 20 miles from the edge of Belrithl Delta.

History

This massive river is the lifeblood of the Agroven Kingdom. Its waters keep the Meadow Vale lush and green. It is the main traderoute and passage between the cities, and in fact the reason that there are so few major roads is that the Ritlir fulfills this need almost perfectly.
