Abron
Abron, sometimes referred to as the Western Heartland (or often simply the Heart) is a region in western Emiroth. It is home to the powerful kingdom of Abron. Its terrain is diverse, but the region is well-settled and rich with natural resources. It is bordered by the Thiasia Ocean to the north, by Conwy to the west, by Nulbundin and the Sea of Phaida to the south, and by the North Sea to the northeast. It also shares a small land border with Achith via the Nargonde Isthmus.
Geography
Abron's terrain is exceptionally diverse, but it has some defining features. The northern part of the region is densely forested, though the forests give way to thick marshlands in the northwest where the Iron River meets the Thiasia Ocean. Much of the south of the region is also wooded, though not as densely as in the north. The southern woods give way to a fertile coastal plain on the Sea of Phaida. There are two large lakes in the southeast of the region, Lake Faren and Lake Briathe (though Lake Briathe might be more accurately called a tidal estuary of the Sea of Achith).
The central part of the region is mostly uninhabited wasteland, much of it rocky, desolate, and difficult to traverse, with only sparse vegetation and little water. Though this area is mostly uninhabited, it is not completely deserted; the Akud Waste has some small outposts where people gather the area's resources, primarily from mines.
Abron has been inhabited since at least the Second Age, so ancient ruins litter the landscape, some of the oldest weathered away to heaps barely recognizable as anything more than rocks. In the southern woods especially, crumbling ancient towers dot the land, along with weathered fortresses and other remnants of antiquity.
Fauna & Flora
Abron supports a wide variety of plants and animals. Glitterhold Forest in the north is a dense coniferous forest of pine, fir, spruce, and hemlock trees, with thickets of other dense vegetation forming its understory. In contrast, the Llangef Wood in the south consists mainly of deciduous trees such as birch, oak, ash, and maple. In both forests, fur and game animals are common, as is edible plant matter such as herbs and berries. The area between the two woodlands is relatively barren; sparse vegetation grows in the rocky crags, and only small creatures such as reptiles and birds are able to survive in such conditions. The rolling plain between Ammar's Desolation and the Llangef Wood is much more fertile, rippling with tall grasses and occasionally punctuated by copses of oak and ash near gullies and creeks flowing into Lake Faren.
Natural Resources
Long coveted for its abundant natural resources, Abron is a rich land. The forests provide timber and game. The fertile plains in the east and south are suitable for farming and produce most of the region's supply of grain. The marshes in the northwest provide pitch and oil. Though the Akud Waste in the west of the region has very little flora or fauna, it is rich in mineral resources, especially iron and copper. Granite and marble are quarried here, as well, and precious metals are also present in the area.
