Asimi Settlement in Emicara | World Anvil

Asimi

Asimi is best known in Alsona as a community of strange ideas and infested with foreigners. The leadership of the community was for a long time open to new ideas and welcomed in the refugees from the dwarven mountain strongholds far more enthusiastically than any other town or city in Alsona. The countesses welcomed them with open arms, which has led to Asimi being home to a prosperous minority of dwarves, compared to other lands. These new immigrants proved surprisingly loyal to the kingdom during the Wingo War, with only a handful of incidents of sabotage or conflict taking place in the region. The town considers themselves to be bitter rivals with the nearby settlement of Gordon, and also plays host to the prosperous Apps Mining Company.

Demographics

Asimi is predominantly a human town, but unlike most other Alsonan towns and cities, it possesses a large community of other races and minorities. The largest of these are the mountain dwarves, refugees from a series of disasters and conflicts in the Apps Mountains. Over the past two decades, nearly half of the population has become dwarven. Outside of the dwarves, Asimi is the most comfortable place for racial minorities, and this has led to the settlement of gnomes and halflings in considerable numbers. Halfbreed orcs and elves have also found a home here, although they are still shunned by the humans of the town, but to a lesser degree than would be found elsewhere in the nation.

Government

The reigning noble of the region of Makriathea is the direct ruler over the town and its environs. She appoints any delegates or individuals required for solving problems relating to the town's administration, and over the years a form of bureaucracy has emerged for the purposes of defense and tax collection. Although the town's defense has recently been turned over to the Royal Army of Alsona in the wake of the Wingo War, law and order is still upkept by the countess' employees, including guards and appointed judges.

Defences

The town wall of Asimi has become more of an idea than a functioning bulwark against invasion. It was fortunate for the community that raiders from the dwarven and elven kingdoms during the Wingo War never made it far east enough to pose a threat. Although the walls still do exist, they have been poorly maintained, and for the most part the community now relies upon the Alsonan Rangers for dealing with exceptional short term problems, and a large militia to deal with more numerous threats. Although it may seem that Asimi is therefore quite week and vulnerable, the militia is well drilled, with their leadership consisting of veterans of numerous conflicts in the Apps Mountains, dwarves who have seen literally hundreds of years of experience in battles and guard duties. Due to the nature of the town, the countess has had to rely upon this militia heavily for guard and law enforcement duties, as due to racial tensions, the Royal Army has not been deployed here.

Infrastructure

Asimi is a well developed settlement, with paved roads marking the streets, clear drainage to deal with storms, and a growing system of sewers constructed by the dwarven population. The dwarves have helped with much of this, willingly putting in volunteer time and resources to help improve the settlement on behalf of its new mayor, who has become highly beloved. One of the wonders of the town is the Tracks, which allows rapid transport of goods and people from one end of the town to the other, based on designs used in Apps mountain strongholds. The dwarves have brought with them their arts of metallurgy, and the growing trade in steel and refined ores has turned Asimi into the thriving enter of industry in eastern Alsona.

Districts

The Old Town and the New Town are the two areas that residents refer to in Asimi. The Old Town consists of the area that was Asimi prior to the influx of dwarven refugees, behind the old walls and defenses. Significantly smaller than the rest of the community, the Old Town offers the more luxurious homes and shops, where the old money and families of Asimi reside. The Tracks have enabled a rapid connection between the central marketplace and the outlaying New Town, as goods and people can be brought into the market center without disrupting the flow of traffic. The residents of Old Town are predominantly human, although numerous dwarves have begun buying their way in, as the more xenophobic humans have widely decided to depart for new homes in Gordon.   The New Town is recently built by the dwarven immigrants from the east. The quality of these residences vary greatly in size and quality. Some dwellings are ramshackle wooden buildings that regularly collapse in high winds, used by new arrivals and the desperately poor. Others are sturdy structures that are larger underground than they are above ground, acting as a replica of the dwarven old ways of delving into the earth and a small taste of home. The architecture also varies wildly, taking themes from over a dozen different dwarven strongholds, as well as halfling and elven influenced buildings. Even the gadgets and devices of gnomes can be found adorning a handful of dwelling belonging to those elusive folk.

Assets

Caravans regularly pass through Asimi from the Long Road, and while they don't tend to stop very long here as they would outside of Gordon or in the larger cities of the west, their items are for sale to those who can catch up with them. The town itself hosts numerous dwarven operated businesses, and their cuisine and craftsmanship can be seen on display in the finest of institutions that have sprung up over recent decades. Complementing the variety of shops, there are also inns catering to the cultures and norms of myriad races, providing exotic drinks, servers, and entertainment. These include even such diverse cultures such as those of goblins or catfolk.
